Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings News Release
Laredo - Laredo Broncos starter Ryan Harris (3-4) threw seven shutout innings to beat the Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings 3-0 tonight at Veterans Field.
Harris scattered seven hits, walked one and struck out one.
The WhiteWings (16-20) only had two base runners at the same time in an inning twice. In the first, Brian Nichols hit a single with Justin Holloway on second base, but Holloway was thrown out at the plate by David Cardona to end the inning. In the seventh, Welinson Baez and Joaquin Rodriguez hit one-out singles, but Sandy DeLeon grounded into an inning-ending double play.
The Broncos (12-24) got on the board against Reymond Cruz (4-3) in the third. With one out, OJ Garza hit his first home run of the season to make it 1-0.
Jamie Morales led off the bottom of the fourth with a single. One out later, Argelis Nunez hit his seventh home run of the season to make it 3-0.
The Broncos had a chance to put the game out of reach in the sixth after loading the bases with one out, but Robert Moron hit a grounder to first, allowing Alberto Cruz to throw home for the first out and DeLeon to throw back to first for the double play.
After Harris left the game, Jonathan Poterson drew a pinch-hit walk to leadoff the eighth against Julio Pinto, but Agustin Septimo grounded into a double play and Denys Lantigua struck out looking to end the inning.
Septimo was held hitless (0-for-4) for the seventh time this season. The WhiteWings are now 0-7 in those games.
Franklyn Gracesqui pitched a scoreless ninth for his second save.
The WhiteWings welcome the San Angelo Colts to Harlingen Field for the first game of a four-game series tomorrow night at 7:05. Right-hander Sendy Vasquez (1-3) will face left-hander Drew Coffey (2-1). The WhiteWings will be raffling and auctioning off their special Hawaiian- style game-worn jerseys courtesy of Local's Lounge during and after the game. Gates open at 6:05.
