Victoria HabourCats News Release
VICTORIA, B.C. - The Victoria HarbourCats continue to fine tune their roster for the 2016 West Coast League season, now less than two weeks away. The club has signed several players to 10-day contracts, headlined by Ethan Skuija from the University of British Columbia.
RHP ETHAN SKUIJA, UBC, (Freshman), Victoria, BC, 6-3/200
Ethan Skuija is a highly regarded Victoria product in the final stages of his freshman year at the University of British Columbia. Skuija played in the BCPBL for the Victoria Eagles and was one of the league's top arms as a senior in 2015, going 8-2 with a 1.53 ERA and 62 strikeouts in 63.2 innings pitched. In 10 appearances this spring for UBC, Skuija has allowed 13 hits with 14 strikeouts in 14.1 innings with a 5.02 ERA.
Others signed to 10-day contracts--
OF JORDAN ACKERMAN, Bluefield College, (Junior), John Day, Oregon, 5-7/175
3B JUSTIN BUNDY, Northeast Texas CC, (Freshman), Edgewood, Texas, 6-1/200
1B WILL DAWSON, Northeast Texas CC, (Freshman), Cypress, Texas, 6-4/230
INF COLE SULLIVAN, Northeast Texas CC, (Freshman), Canton, Texas, 5-11/190
OF JAMIE COOPER, Occidental University, (Sophomore), McLean, Virginia, 6-1/195
The intent for adding players on 10-day contracts is to help fill the gaps in the first two to three series with quality players who will maintain the competitive level of the HarbourCats roster, while a number of full season players are absent while still competing in their collegiate seasons. 10-day players will have an opportunity to earn their way into a full season contract through their performance. These 10-day contracts will last until June 10, at which time the team will make decisions on each player.
UNIVERSITY OF PORTLAND INFIELDER JUSTIN BROWN SIGNED
The HarbourCats have signed infielder Justin Brown from the University of Portland (NCAA Div. 1; WCC) for the 2016 season.
INF JUSTIN BROWN, Portland (Freshman), Lake Stevens, WA, 5-9/190
Justin Brown was a highly sought-after recruit coming out of Lake Stevens High School in 2015, with multiple division one offers including a Pac-12 offer, ultimately electing to go to Portland. Brown, who redshirted this season, comes with tremendously high praise from his coaches as a very talented middle infielder that figures to be a major part of the Pilots plans going forward. He will step in and compete for a role on the HarbourCats infield this summer.
BAGGINS BASH RETURNS TO HARBOURCATS GAMES
Baggins Shoes, the well-known local shoe store located on lower Johnson Street in Victoria, returns for their third season as the official shoe of the HarbourCats.
This means the return of the Baggins Bash to Royal Athletic Park in 2016. The first home team base hit of every HarbourCats game will result in one lucky fan winning a pair of HarbourCats branded Vans Shoes courtesy of Baggins, a fixture in Victoria since 1969.
The HarbourCats are very pleased to continue a great partnership with Baggins, now into its third year. Many HarbourCats fans have benefitted from this partnership already, and many more will this summer! Baggins Shoes and the HarbourCats: the perfect fit!
MORE PLAYERS REMOVED FROM ROSTER
The HarbourCats have seen more fall-off from the 2016 roster, a development that is not unexpected as the college season comes to an end. Previously announced signings who are unable to come to Victoria this summer include:
INF Rykker Tom, University of San Diego
RHP Chris Vargas, UC Irvine
RHP Mason Hilty, Dixie State
The HarbourCats would like to thank each of these players for their commitment to the HarbourCats and wish them all well in their futures.
