HarbourCats Looking for Offence to Return
June 18, 2014 - West Coast League (WCL)
Victoria HabourCats News Release
The fans came early, visions of a HarbourCats bobblehead in their minds, and settled in for a much-anticipated weeknight contest with the West Division-rival Bellingham Bells at Sports Traders Diamond.
The bobbleheads, sponsored by Fisherworks Irrigation Services, were a hit. Only two other hits would come from the bats belonging to the home club as the Victoria HarbourCats dropped their third straight game with a 7-2 setback at the hands of the visiting Bells.
The HarbourCats (5-6, fourth place in West Division) got hits from Devin Carter (Pepperdine) and Nathan Lukes (Sacramento State), the latter with a two-RBI double in the bottom of the second, and were deadlocked with the Bells at that point of the game. The odd stat of the night indicated the HarbourCats were fortunate to be in a dead heat, considering the largest number on the scoreboard as the third inning started was the Victoria error total (3).
The game, played in front of 1,372 on a night with a slight chill in the air, was a tied or one-run affair for most of the game with Bellingham scoring one run in the top of the fifth to take the lead. But like Monday, when the Bells used seven late runs to blow open a close game, the Bells took advantage of the Victoria bullpen and expanded the lead with a pair of runs in each of the final two innings.
Seth Martinez was the winning pitcher and at one point set down 19 straight HarbourCats hitters. He finished with 10 of his team's dozen strikeouts and throwing as clean an eight-inning outing as you'll see.
Andrew Nelson (Kentucky, now 0-2 this WCL season) was the losing pitcher, giving up five hits and three runs with four strikeouts in six innings. Preston Ryan (New Mexico) and Alex Fagalde (Cuesta College) both gave up two runs, Ryan in two innings of work and Fagalde in a sloppy ninth.
The HarbourCats and Bells conclude the series Wednesday night, 7:11pm at Sports Traders Diamond, and RHP Mike Wright (San Jose State) gets the call on the mound for Victoria. It is ISLAND SAVINGS GAMENIGHT at the park, gates open at 6pm, game at 7:11pm.
