Victoria HabourCats News Release
BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- The Bellingham Bells may have won five of six games played against the Victoria HarbourCats so far this season, but none have been easy.
The HarbourCats lost yet another close game to the Bells on Thursday night, mustering just three hits in falling 2-0 at Joe Martin Field. A pitchers' duel was in the cards, but the HarbourCats -- who remain very much in the playoff picture -- fell to 18-21 on the season, three back of the wildcard spot. The Bells are 26-13 to date.
The two teams played six games in a row against each other, once in Victoria and once in Bellingham, separated by the all-star break.
Alex DeGoti, Austin Guibor (with a double) and Jackson Thoreson were the only HarbourCats to reach base by way of a hit.
The Bells, on the other hand, squandered a number of chances that came from their 10-hit outing.
The Bells scored runs in the second and fifth innings, and Bellingham starter Andrew Kemmerer was the story helping limit the HarbourCats to that final tally of three hits. Kemmerer went seven innings with two hits allowed and seven strikeouts, walking one.
HarbourCats starter Dominic Topoozian, an all-star from Fresno State, went seven innings with six strikeouts, seven hits allowed, two runs given up, and three walks. He gave way to Shawn Kennedy, who got three strikeouts around three hits in the bottom of the eighth.
But it's back to Sports Traders Diamond tomorrow for the Victoria club, and the home field atmosphere they love so much.
It's a busy promotional weekend as the HarbourCats return home to face the Walla Walla Sweets, with games Friday night, Saturday night and Sunday afternoon.
It's the final Forces Friday of the season sponsored by Galaxy Motors ($5 entry for military members and families) with special first pitches from Andy LaCroix of View Royal Casino, the Base Chief of CFB Esquimalt, and three gold medalists from the Pan Am Games and Rugby Canada. There's a Team Poster giveaway with Metropol, giveaways from Mike's Hard Lemonade, and the Naden Band will perform the anthems. As well, Super Mega Baseball will give away 100 game codes for their popular Playstation video game (value $19.95 each).
On Saturday, it's Castle Home Building Centres Night, with necklace giveaways by Kirby's Source for Sports. The HarbourCats will welcome participants in the AAA Peewee Provincial tournament, being played at Carnarvon.
Then, Sunday, it's usedvictoria.com's Paint the Park Purple game, with HarbourAir presenting the arrival of Big Brother Canada houseguests Sindy With An S and Naeha, joining HarbourCats head coach Graig Merritt, who was on the show this past spring. Maple Leaf Meats will be front and centre with a hot dog eating contest, and all kids 16 and under will get free hot dogs -- especially the hundreds of Cadets who will be there to take in the game.
