Happ Wins Second Carolina League Weekly Honor

MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. - Myrtle Beach Pelicans second baseman Ian Happ has been named the Carolina League Player of the Week for June 13-19, the league's office announced Monday. The honor is Happ's second weekly award this season.

The No. 3 prospect in the Cubs' system and No. 68 prospect in baseball according to MLB.com, Happ was 13-for-25 in seven games during the week, batting .520/.571/.960 with six doubles, a triple, home run and six RBIs. He recorded five multi-hit performances, including four in a row to close the week.

A Pittsburgh native, Happ has reached in 14 of his last 16 games, slashing .385/.500/.673 with seven doubles, one triple, two home runs, 11 RBIs and 12 walks during that span. The surge has propelled him into the league lead in free passes (48), while ranking in a tie for first in games played (69), third in on-base percentage (.410) and fourth in batting average (.296).

The Cubs' first-round pick, ninth overall, in 2015 is hitting .296/.410/.475 with 16 doubles, three triples, seven home runs and 42 RBIs this season. He has also swiped 10 bases in 13 attempts.

Happ will represent Myrtle Beach along with right-handed pitchers Zach Hedges, Trevor Clifton and Jake Stinnett in Tuesday's California-Carolina League All-Star Game in Lake Elsinore, Calif. First pitch is set for 9:30 p.m. ET.

Happ also won Carolina League Player of the Week for April 18-24, with third baseman Jason Vosler and first baseman Yasiel Balaguert taking it back-to-back for May 9-15 and May 16-22, respectively.

Following the All-Star Break, the Pelicans will begin the second half with a four-game series beginning Thursday at 7:05 p.m. at TicketReturn.Com Field at Pelicans Ballpark against the Carolina Mudcats.
