WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Winston-Salem starting pitcher Spencer Adams earned the Carolina League's Pitcher of the Week for June 13-19, the league office announced Monday afternoon. Adams, who leads the Carolina League with 87.2 innings pitched, is the third Dash pitcher in 2016 to take home this honor.
Last Thursday, the 20-year-old shined against the Salem Red Sox at BB&T Ballpark. In a wire-to-wire 7-1 Dash victory, Adams allowed just three hits and struck out four batters in eight shutout innings. The Georgia native has now thrown eight or more innings in three out of his last four starts.
The White Sox selected Adams with the 44th overall pick in the 2014 Draft out of White County High School (Ga.). After compiling a combined 12-5 record and a 2.99 ERA with Low-A Kannapolis and Winston-Salem in 2015, the right-hander began the 2016 season as the Dash staff ace. The Carolina League's innings leader is 7-4 with a 3.59 ERA in 14 outings with the Dash this season.
This is Winston-Salem's fourth league honor in 2016 and third awarded to a Dash pitcher. Fellow right-handed starter Matt Cooper was the first rotation member to take home the weekly honor for his work from May 30-June 5. Right-handed reliever Manny Martinez became the first reliever in the Dash era (2009-present) to earn the weekly honor from May 16-22. Nick Basto earned the CL's Player of the Month award for April after hitting .433 and leading the minors with 39 hits.
After a three-day break for the California-Carolina League All-Star game, the Dash begin the second half slate at BB&T Ballpark from June 23-26 against the Wilmington Blue Rocks. Winston-Salem right-hander Jordan Stephens (2-7, 4.25 ERA) will get the start for Thursday's 7 p.m. contest.
