The Story:

Cross Hanas netted a hat-trick, Kyle Chyzowski recorded three assists and Taylor Gauthier stopped 31 of 32 shots to help the Winterhawks knock off the Seattle Thunderbirds 5-1 at accesso ShoWare Center on Friday night.

With the win, Portland owns a 3-1 lead in the clubs' second-round playoff series and could advance to the Western Conference Championship with a win in Game 5 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum on Saturday.

For the first time in this series, Portland was the first team on the board on Friday when Hanas capitalized on a failed Seattle breakout and whipped a shot through Thomas Milic for an early 1-0 lead. Later on, the Winterhawks' power play showed some life as Hanas and Clay Hanus chipped in assists on Tyson Kozak's second of the postseason for a 2-0 lead. Hanus carried the puck along the blue line, then found a wide-open Kozak in the high slot for a quick wrister over Milic's shoulder.

Seattle began to claw back into the game early in the second period with a power-play strike of their own from Lukas Svejkovksy, but another two Portland tallies on the man-advantage boosted the visitors' advantage to three heading into the second intermission. Hanas' second of the game and third of the playoffs made it 3-1 at 11:42 - Chyzowski dished a pass to Jaydon Dureau at the blue line for his first helper of the night, Dureau then sent it across the ice to a streaking Hanas, who out-waited an antsy Milic before depositing the puck in a yawning cage. Jack O'Brien joined the fun six minutes later with his second of the playoffs, finishing off another Chyzowski feed at the back door for Portland's third PPG of the evening.

A tense third period gave way to just one goal as Hanas wrapped up his hat-trick with a shorthanded empty-net marker at 19:41, again assisted by Chyzowski.

Both teams head south for Game 5, set for 6:00 P.M. on Saturday at the VMC.

QUOTE OF THE NIGHT presented by BBF TECHNOLOGIES:

"Our line's been getting matched up against (Seattle's) top line...it's been tough, we know we got outplayed by them the other day at home so we had a couple of line meetings about it and how we were going to play tonight. It was just a matter of time before we were going to break through. It feels really good for all of us, I mean Kozy, Rob, we were all working hard today and owning the puck just how we know we can play."
