Visalia Rawhide News Release
LAKE ELSINORE â Justin Hampson turned in his second dominating performance on the Oaks nine game road trip with seven shutout innings in a 6-1 victory at Lake Elsinore. Hampson struck out six, allowed one walk and only four hits â all of which were doubles to earn his eleventh victory and improve to 11-4.
Visalia held a lead for a full inning for the first time in the series in the first inning. The scored a pair of runs to go up 2-0.
A bases loaded sacrifice fly to centerfield by Corey Slavik drove in Doug Bernier for the first run. Jeff Winchester singled up the middle and Dan Phillips scored to make the Oaks lead 2-0.
Another run scored in the top of the second. Jayson Nix lined a two-out single to center and took second on his team-leading 21st steal of the year.
Nix scored on a ground ball smashed by Bernier to shortstop Jack Santora that went through to left field and was scored an error. Visalia was on top, 3-0.
Starting pitcher Mike Thompson was finally chased from the game in the third inning when the Storm committed its third error of the game. The Oaks also hit three doubles in the inning.
Winchester's second hit was an RBI double in the third that plated Slavik from first following a one-out error. A wild pitch moved Winchester to third and Hector Tena was then robbed of a hit by a diving catch made in right-centerfield by Josh Carter. Winchester was able to tag-up and score for a sacrifice fly that made the lead 5-0.
With the bass empty, Jason Frome came up with his only hit of the series, which was a double to right field. Frome was the last batter faced by Storm starter Mike Thompson, who allowed six unearned runs in 2.2 innings and took the loss.
Former Major League pitcher Rob Ramsey came on and Melvin Rosario hit his first pitch for a double down the right field line. Frome scored and the Oaks were in front, 6-0.
Ramsey went on to retire the next nine hitters in a row and worked 4.1 shutout innings as the Oaks managed only one hit after the third.
Hampson was relieved by Sean Green, who retired the first two batters he faced in the eighth, but allowed back-to-back walks and an RBI single to Greg Sain. The hit broke up a bid for Visalia's 12th shutout of the season with two out in the bottom of the eighth, but Green struck out the next batter, Ben Johnson, to end the inning.
Ryan Speier pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the win. He allowed the third of three doubled on the night hit by Michael Johnson. Josh Barfield had two doubles for the Storm, which had only six hits total on the night.
