Lancaster JetHawks News Release
Lancaster Ca. - Jay Garthwaite's three-run homer with two outs in the sixth inning, powered the JetHawks from behind in an 8-4 victory over the High Desert Mavericks at the Hangar. Lancaster (59-55, 20-24) raises their record by taking two of three in the series, while the Mavericks (35-78, 10-33) lose for the 14th time in 20 games in the season series.
Garthwaite's homer highlighted a four-run sixth allowing the JetHawks to erase a 4-2 deficit. It was his 18th of the season, and second of the series. Garthwaite also drove in runs with a bases loaded walk in the third, and on a one out single in the eighth.
The comeback began when the JetHawks trailed 4-1 entering the bottom of the fourth. Kyle Nichols led off with a hard grounder off of the leg of starter Chad Petty. Petty remained in the game, and one out later allowed a single to Mike DiRosa and a walk to Jason Gorman to load the bases. Danny Richar hit into a fielder's choice, bringing the deficit to two.
The score remained 4-3 until the sixth, when the JetHawks erupted for four runs. Jason Gorman hit a fly ball for a triple over the head of Ralph Santana, who had Gorman played shallow in right field. Richar then singled home Gorman for a one run deficit. Dan Uggla singled with two outs ahead of Garthwaite's home run to give the JetHawks their first lead of the game.
Garthwaite and Steve Neal added RBI singles in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
Cliff McMachen (5-2) picked up the win with five innings of relief. McMachen allowed five hits and three runs (one earned) while striking out three. It was McMachen's second relief outing of five innings this season.
Danny Stout (1-1) took the loss in allowing four earned runs â including Garthwaite's homer â in two innings, on four hits. He walked two and struck out four.
The Mavericks made a last ditch effort with two outs in the ninth. Pinch-hitter Brian Foster drew a walk, and Chris Morris doubled with two strikes down the left field line, sending Foster to third. But Pete Sikaras came in to retire Todd West on a shallow fly ball to left field, where Mike Thiessen made a sliding catch. Sikaras earned his 14th save of the season.
Following an off day, the JetHawks open up a six game road trip on Tuesday with a three game series against the Modesto A's. Scott Barber (10-7, 5.48) will pitch the first game of the series, against Steve Fischer (4-4, 4.55) for the A's. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
