Wilmington Hammerheads FC News Release
Wilmington, NC - Wilmington Hammerheads FC announced the signing of defender Ashani Fairclough to the 2016 USL regular season roster.
Fairclough is returning to the Hammerheads after one season with Seattle Sounders FC 2. He formerly played with the Wilmington Hammerheads in 2014 and was named to the USL Pro first team at the end of that season. Prior to his professional career, the 6'2" center back played for the University of South Florida, making 73 appearances during his time with the Bulls. His defensive abilities and ability to read the game were noticed early on and he was named one of College Soccer News' "100 Freshmen to Watch."
Upon his return to the Hammerheads, Fairclough stated, "I am really excited to be back with the Hammerhead organization. Playing in front of these ardent fans is something I always enjoyed." He continued, "I have a great relationship with the Wilmington community and coach Briggs and I'm looking forward playing every minute with heart and passion, while assisting our team in achieving our goals for the season."
Fairclough, originally from Portmore, Jamaica, also represented the U17 National Team as captain at the young age of only 15 years old and a member of the U20 team the next year.
Head Coach Mark Briggs followed up Fairclough's statement saying, "It was a no brainer when we learned Ashani was available. He is an exceptional soccer player, with a leadership mentality. We've seen his talent and know what a value he will be once again to our team."
