WINNIPEG, MB - The Winnipeg Blue Bombers announce that halfback Jonathan Hefney has agreed to a contract with the Detroit Lions of the National Football League, as per the NFL window.

The Winnipeg Football Club congratulates Jonathan and wishes him well in his pursuit. The Winnipeg Blue Bombers will continue along the vein of identifying, pursuing and signing quality players to improve our on-field product.

"While we wish him the best with Detroit, we will certainly welcome him back to help solidify our defence in 2010 if the opportunity arises," said interim VP of Football Operations Ross Hodgkinson.

Hefney's rookie season in the CFL opened some eyes as he was selected to league all-star for his play at halfback. The rookie out of the University of Tennessee started all 18 games this season for the Blue Bombers, amassing 66 defensive tackles, four interceptions and five special teams tackles in his first CFL campaign. He was also the East Division nominee for Most Outstanding Rookie.

"I had a great experience with Winnipeg last season, and really enjoyed my first season in the CFL. If things don't work out with the Lions I look forward to returning to Winnipeg," Hefney said.
