Hagerstown Suns News Release
The Hagerstown Suns open their series with Delmarva with a doubleheader beginning at 5:05 p.m. at Municipal Stadium this evening. RHP Tomas Alastre (4-12, 5.79 ERA) starts the showcase for the Suns, while Delmarva tosses RHP Grayson Rodriguez (9-3, 2.59 ERA). Hagerstown's southpaw Jackson Stoeckinger (2-2, 3.49 ERA) gets the ball for game two while Delmarva counters with lefty Ryan Wilson (5-4, 2.79 ERA).

SUNS TAKE SERIES WITH SHUTOUT VICTORY: Suns pitchers dominated Greenville hitters and combined for a one-hit shutout in their 2-0 victory over the Drive at Municipal Stadium Thursday. Jackson Rutledge (W, 2-0) got the start for the Suns (59-70, 29-30) and put together an efficient five innings. The first-round pick worked five scoreless and allowed only one hit while striking out three Greenville (53-75, 21-37) batters. Hagerstown went to the bullpen in the sixith and called on Matt Cronin, who continued the shutout. Cronin tossed two scoreless frames and struck out a career-high five batters. The lefty has now pitched six consecutive scoreless innings. Ryan Williamson (S, 1) finished off a stellar staff performance with a scoreless eighth and ninth to lock down the series-clinching victory. The lefty retired all six batters he faced and recorded one strikeout.
ONE FOR THE RECORD BOOKS: Last night's shutout was the fifth of the season for Hagerstown. The last shutout came July 26 at the Rome Braves. The pitching performance was even more dominant than that though. Hagerstown allowed just a single hit in the game. It was the Suns first one hitter since Phillips Valdez and Justin Amlung accomplished the feat May 18, 2015.
WORK HORSES MISSING BATS: Saturday, Tomas Alastre fanned seven batters to reach 106 strikeouts on the year. He became the first Suns pitcher since Jackson Tetreault, who wrung up 118 batters last year, to reach the 100 strikeout plateau. Sunday, Jake Irvin joined the club, fanning two batters to reach 100 on the season. It's the first time Hagerstown has a pair of pitchers with 100 k's since Pedro Encarnacion (113) and Nick Lee (102) hit the mark in 2013.
THE LONGEST ROAD: Reid Schaller has found his home away from home in his last few outings. In his last 15 innings on the road, the Vanderbilt-product has allowed just one run to score and in the mean-time has given up just six hits. Adding to that, he has been able to make a ton of bats miss, recording 16 strikeouts over the last 15 frames and a dizzying career-high eight in his outing Thursday. Schaller was able to keep it going at Municipal Stadium Wednesday, striking out six more while allowing just one earned run.
PLUCKING AT THE HEART STRINGS: The Suns have moved their record to .500 multiple times in the second half. Lacking the ability to go above .500, they have not won a game at .500 despite owning an even record for five games. After Wednesday's loss, the Suns record is 29-30 meaning Hagerstown would need to win back-to-back to go above .500.
COUNTING IT DOWN: Hagerstown has just 11 games remaining this season, with 7 of them coming at Municipal Stadium. The Suns will give away two more bobbleheads, beginning with a Mike Mussina Hall of Fame Bobblehead August 24. In addition to that, the Suns will also have their final fireworks show August 23 following the game against Delmarva.
ROLLING RHINO: Jacob Rhinesmith is riding a six-game hitting streak, his fourth six-or-more-game streak of the season. That's compared to 14 such streaks for the remainder of the team. Rhinesmith has 122 hits this season, the most for a Suns player since Blake Perkins had 123 in the 2017 season.
