TAPANI GOES FIVE SCORELESS IN 5-1 WIN: Ryan Tapani twirled five scoreless innings and Gilbert Lara mashed three runs home as the Suns defeated the Delmarva Shorebirds 3-1 at Arthur W. Perdue Stadium Sunday afternoon. Tapani (W, 3-4) worked a career-high five innings while fanning four batters in the win. The Creighton-product handed the ball to Ryan Williamson, who allowed one run across three innings before giving way to Trey Turner, who offered a scoreless ninth to shut down the Shorebirds (46-16). Hagerstown (28-35) got the bats going early for the day game. Lara smacked his eighth homer of the year over the right field fence with two away in the top of the first. Two innings later, the Suns added to their lead behind back-to-back RBI singles from Lara and Jacob Rhinesmith to put Hagerstown in front 3-0.
BULLIES IN THE PEN: After recording a 4.38 ERA through their first 25 games, the bullpen has been on an absolute tear. The pen's ERA currently sits at 3.22 after hitting a 2.36 mark, allowing just 35 runs in their last 133.2 innings. After allowing 48 earned runs to score against them in April, the bullpen has allowed an average of less than one run to score per game while working an average of 3.51 innings per game for Hagerstown. The Suns overall ERA of 3.31 is the third lowest in the South Atlantic League behind Greensboro and Delmarva.
MULTI-HIT MARINCONZ: Kyle Marinconz finished Sunday's win 2-for-4, scoring and driving in a run the day after he went 3-for-4 with a homer and a stolen base. The second baseman finished the series against Delmarva hitting .500 (6-for-12) and Sunday marked his 10th multi-hit game of the season.
TREMENDOUS TURNER: Trey Turner was activated from Extended Spring Training May 8, since then, he has appeared in six games, spinning 10.1 innings and punching out 21 batters. Opponents are merely hitting .114 against him in the short time he's been in the South Atlantic League.
THE COMFORTS OF HOME: The Suns have started the season 3-9 against Lakewood and 16-26 against Northern Division opponents, but that number is marginally different at Municipal Stadium. Hagerstown has claimed two of the three games they've played against the BlueClaws at home and are 8-7 within the division.
HAVE YOURSELF A DAY, DAY: Chandler Day spun two innings in Friday's win over Delmarva to keep Hagerstown in front of the Shorebirds.. Since May 6, the Vanderbilt-product has turned a new leaf. In 18.1 innings, he has allowed just nine hits while setting down 17 batters via the strikeout and allowing just two earned run. It's been good enough to drop his ERA from 5.29 to 3.15 over his last seven outings. During that span, his opponent's batting average has also dropped significantly from .314 to .252. In May, the righty made six appearances and earned a 1.80 ERA in 15 innings pitched, while holding opponents to a .142 average.
HEY NOW, YOU'RE AN ALL-STAR: Jacob Rhinesmith and Gilbert Lara will represent Hagerstown in the 60th annual South Atlantic League All-Star game. Lara holds the league's longest hitting streak this season (19 games) and Rhinesmith leads the Suns in on-base percentage (.389).
