Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala. - As someone named Dorothy once said: "there's no place like home."
The Biscuits (18-23) were more than content to be back at Riverwalk Stadium following their 10-game road trip, defeating the Tennessee Smokies (22-19)-a team they saw six days ago-4-3 on what was a tense, and not so enjoyable Thursday night victory in the Capital City.
Montgomery got things going in third with a two-run triple by Boog Powell down the first base line and Joey Rickard followed suit with an RBI single in the next at-bat to make it 3-0 against lefthander Jeffry Antigua (2-2).
Bradin Hagens (2-4) was terrific on the other side going seven strong innings of near shutout ball, his lone blemish surrendering an RBI double in the top half of the seventh to Willson Contreras. At one point the righthander retired 15 straight Smokies en route to just his second victory of the season.
It was 4-1 Biscuits entering the ninth, thanks to a sixth inning RBI triple by Patrick Leonard, but Bryce Stowell, who had been effective in his previous two outings as closer, walked four consecutive batters to begin the ninth and allowed a run on a wild pitch to make it 4-2. Stowell was then removed by manager Brady Williams mid-at-bat on a 2-0 count, and replaced by reliever Colton Reavis. The righty from Texas got Dan Vogelbach to fly out, which scored another run, and a base-running error by Kyle Schwarber made it a double play as the Smokies DH was caught tagging from first. Reavis then got Contreras to ground out to shortstop to end the game.
It wasn't comfortable but the Biscuits did enough to hang on and take the first of this five-game series versus Tennesee. They'll look to make it two in a row tomorrow night when Jaime Schultz (4-1) takes on Frank Batista (4-0).
