Mississippi Braves News Release

Jacksonville, FL - The Mississippi Braves pulled away to three run leads twice in the late innings, holding on in the tenth for an 8-7 series-opening, wild win over the Jacksonville Suns Thursday night at Bragan Field.

With the M-Braves (22-18) leading 5-2 in the Suns' ninth, bases loaded and two outs, Mallex Smith had the final out in his glove, but he dropped the ball on the warning track and all three Suns (15-25) scored to force extras tied at 5-5.

In the tenth, Emerson Landoni singled on a flare down the right field line, plating Rio Ruiz for the Braves' go-ahead run.  Eric Garcia doubled home two more for an 8-5 lead.

The Suns battled right back with an Austin Nola two-run double to pull it to 8-7 in the bottom of the 10th, but Ryan Weber got David Adams to ground out to third and end the game.

Jason Hursh took a no-decision, allowing two runs on ten hits over 6 1/3 innings of work, nabbing his second quality start, but Kendry Flores matched him with two runs, one earned, on four hits over seven innings.

With the game tied 2-2, Mississippi scored the first go-ahead run in the eighth when KD Kang dropped a bloop two-out single to score Smith. They plated two more in the ninth on a Corban Joseph single, but a 5-2 lead wasn't enough.

Francisco Rondon (2-0) blew his first save in the ninth with three unearned runs, but picked up the win. Weber (S, 1) earned his first double-A save, and his first professional save since pitching for the advanced class-A Lynchburg Hillcats in 2012.  Reliever Sean Donatello (0-2) took the loss with five runs, three earned, on five hits over two frames.

Jacksonville started the scoring in the bottom of the first. Carlos Lopez doubled and Kenny Wilson reached on an error by Kevin Ahrens for men at the corners. A double-play to short brought the run in for a 1-0 lead.

Mississippi tied the game 1-1 in the top of the third. Smith walked with two out, an errant pickoff throw moved him to second, and Corban Joseph drove him home with an RBI single.

The Suns pulled ahead again in the bottom of the third. Lopez again led off with a double, and Nola drove him in with a knock for a 2-1 lead.

The Braves came right back to tie it 2-2 in the fifth when Matt Kennelly doubled and Smith had an RBI infield hit, one of three hits on the day.

Jacksonville threatened with the bases loaded in each of the final three frames, but Juan Jaime and Bryton Trepagnier got out of the seventh and eighth unscathed before the ninth inning error let the Suns break through.

The Braves continue the series in Jacksonville with the second of five games on Friday night at 6:05 PM CT, with right-hander Tyrell Jenkins (2-2, 3.00) taking the hill against Suns right-hander Jake Esch (3-2, 2.55).

Listen live beginning at 6:00 PM CT on the flagship home of the Mississippi Braves, 103.9 WYAB, and online at MississippiBraves.com.
