New Jersey Jackals News Release

On the same day Joe Calfapietra is named the Can-Am League's Manager of the Year, he wins his 500th game in a Jackals uniform.

It seems fitting Isaac Pavlik got the win.

New Jersey never trailed in their 10-3 rout of Newark, with the team's longest tenured player throwing seven innings of one-run ball for his 12th win of the season. New Jersey is 11-0 when Pavlik pitches following a loss.

On an appropriately gorgeous, comfortable Thursday night at Yogi Berra Stadium, the Jackals used a seven-run fifth inning to ensure Calfapietra would have no doubt today was the day.

It looked bleak early on, but Pavlik worked out of trouble in the second when he escaped a first-and-second, no-out jam unscathed.

Matt Nandin lead off with a solo home run the following inning, his third with the Jackals this season. Chris Curran doubled and would score later in the inning to put New Jersey up 2-0.

Nick Salotti's two-RBI single in the fifth preceded Carlos Guzman's drive of the game - a three-run moon shot that barely eclipsed the right-field wall. New Jersey lead 9-0 before the teams traded seventh-inning runs.

Newark would score two in the ninth to tie a bow on the 10-3 final.

Salotti ended the day 2-5 with two RBIs. Nick Giarraputo also chipped in with two hits and two runs scored.

Pedro Rivera gets the loss. The reigning Pitcher of the Week allowed six runs off five hits in 4 1/3 innings. He drops to 4-11.

Pavlik improves to 12-2.

With the win, New Jersey improves to 57-39, a meaningless seven games back of first-place Quebec with five games to play. New Jersey has already clinched a playoff spot.

The Jackals lead the season series 12-7 against Newark. New Jersey will try to make it lucky #13 when the Manager of the Year sends out Kyle Greenwalt. The righty is 8-3 with a 3.73 ERA. Newark will counter with fellow righty Omar Javier who is 2-2 with a 4.03 ERA in five starts this season.

These two teams face off for the final time in 2012 tomorrow at 7:05. The pregame show starts 10 minutes prior.

This is Calfapietra's fourth Manager of the Year Award, last taking home honors in 2009. Calfapietra now stands at 500-426 in his 10th season as Jackals skipper. He coached New Jersey to a Northern League title in 2004 and will try to coach his club to a 2012 Can-Am Championship when they face off with the Quebec Capitales in the best-of-seven series starting September 5th.
