Gulls Roll Past Mountaineers
June 21, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
Vermont Mountaineers News Release
MONTPELIER, Vt.- The Newport Gulls scored five runs in the fifth inning, leading them to a 7-4 win over the Vermont Mountaineers on Tuesday in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.
Troy Dixon (Egg Harbor Township, N.J. / St. Johns) led off the top of the fifth with a double, and was driven in by a double off the bat of Shane Matheny (Bremerton, Wash. / Washington State). That was followed by a pair of RBI-singles from Cole Fabio (Mahweh, N.J. / Bryant) and Stephen Scott (Cary, N.C. / Vanderbilt).
Outside of that one inning, it was a pitcher's duel for most of the way. Vermont starter Jon Stiever (Cedarburg, Wis./Indiana) went four and two thirds innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits.
Jake Cousins (St. Charles, Ill. / Pennsylvania Univ.) started for Newport. He threw seven solid innings, allowing one run on just two hits. Cousins walked two and struck out three.
The Gulls added a pair of runs in the ninth inning, putting the game out of reach. Stephen Scott knocked a two-out RBI-single, driving in Shane Matheny. Scott later scored on a fielder's choice.
Vermont made things interesting with a rally in the bottom of the ninth. Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville) got them going with a single and a stolen base to lead off the frame. That was followed up by a big two-run homer over to right field by Mikael Mogues (New York, N.Y./Seton Hall). Zeke Pinkham (Louisville, Ky./Louisville) later doubled and scored, but that was all the Mountaineers could muster offensively.
The Vermont bullpen combined to throw four and one third innings, allowing four runs (one earned).
Cousins got the win for Newport. Stiever suffered the loss for the Mountaineers, moving him to 0-1 on the season.
The Mountaineers will be at home again tomorrow night as they welcome in the Ocean State Waves. First pitch is set for 6:30. The game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
