Bay Sox Get Bats Going in 8-4 Win
June 21, 2016 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release
After scoring just 20 runs in their first eight games, the New Bedford Bay Sox exploded for a season-high in hits and runs in an 8-4 victory over the Winnipesaukee Muskrats at home on Tuesday night.
Ryan Wolfsberg (Hamilton), who spent two weeks in the Cape Cod League with the Falmouth Commodores before returning to his NECBL squad on Sunday, blasted a three-run homer in the sixth inning to put the game away for the Bay Sox (2-7). Andrew Penner (Los Angeles Valley) was 3-for-5 with two singles, a double, and two runs batted in, and bumped his batting average from .292 to .345, which leads the Bay Sox.
Chandler Debrosse (Central Connecticut), who was a late addition to the lineup after infielder Ted Shaw (Sacred Heart) was scratched, ripped a two-out single to drive in two runs in a four-run first inning, which was the most productive inning of the season for the home team. The Bay Sox had scored first in only one of their previous eight contests, which occurred in their 4-3 victory over Upper Valley last Wednesday.
The Bay Sox jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead as the offense exploded for six hits off of Muskrats' starter Anthony Pagano. Speedy centerfielder T.J. Dixon (Samford) led the game off with a bloop single to left field, and he scored easily on a long double to deep center by catcher Penner. Penner's shot just kept traveling even though the wind was blowing in from right field to left field, dropping just short of the high fence in center at Paul Walsh Field. Penner moved to third base on a passed ball, and scored on an infield single by Wolfsberg. Keith Klebart (Sacred Heart) and Alex Mata (St. Leo) followed with singles to load the bases, and with two down, Debrosse drove in two runs with a single to right center field.
New Bedford starter P.J. Poulin Jr. (UConn) struggled in his start, lasting just two-plus innings, allowing three runs on three hits and three walks. Poulin was pulled in the top of the third after allowing consecutive walks to start the frame, but reliever Nick Miceli, who was making his team debut on the mound, limited the damage in the inning. The Muskrats scored one run on a sacrifice fly that was dropped by outfielder Ryan Baldwin (Barry), but the Fairhaven, MA standout was able to cut down the trail runner on the error.
Miceli and Darrien Ragins (Delaware State) were outstanding in relief for New Bedford, tossing five combined scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and one walk. Miceli, who was a dual threat at Wesleyan last season, hitting .345 with 25 RBIs while also tossing 68.2 innings with a 3.41 ERA, picked up the victory. He threw three scoreless frames, with zero hits, two Ks, and just one base runner on the Baldwin error.
After being stifled by Winnipesaukee reliever Nicholas Perez through his first two innings, the Bay Sox pounced for a quick three runs without a man being retired in the fifth inning. Consecutive singles by Penner and Baldwin put runners at first and third for Wolfsberg, who blasted a three-run homer deep to left field to give New Bedford a 7-3 lead. They added their eighth run on an RBI single from Penner, driving in Debrosse from third base.
Brandon Schlimm (St. Bonaventure) allowed a run in the eighth inning in relief for the Bay Sox, and Phil Reece (Holy Cross) pitched a scoreless ninth inning in his NECBL debut to seal the victory. Reece allowed the first two hitters he faced to reach base, but then struck out the last three hitters for the Bay Sox' second win of the year.
The Bay Sox start a three-game road trip on Wednesday against Keene, then face Plymouth and Mystic on Friday and Saturday evening. Their next home game is Sunday night against the Mystic Schooners at 6:30pm on Hot Diggity Dog Night at Paul Walsh Field in New Bedford, MA.
