Gulls Nip Falcons

San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls escaped the sharp talons of the Fresno Falcons by soaring away victorious, winning 3-2 Tuesday night at the San Diego Sports Arena. The otherwise uneventful game ended with a nail-biting shootout, with defenseman Mike Garrow scoring the deciding goal. The win puts the struggling Gulls back at 500 and in sole possession of third place in the West Coast Hockey League Standings.
The Gulls (8-8-1) came into the contest evenly matched with the Falcons (7-8-2) and have been battling for third place the past few weeks.
The Falcons drew first blood at 13:36 of the first period with Falcon Mike Mathers' snapshot from the high slot that beat Gulls' goaltender Trevor Koenig glove side. Kayle Short and Austin DeLuis earned the assists.
The Gulls were quick to bite back however, when 13 seconds later, rookie winger Trent Clark unleashed a slap shot that caught Fresno goaltender Terry Friesen at a bad angle and found the back of the net. Dan Cousineau and David Neale earned the assists on Clark's second professional goal.
Both the Gulls and Falcons both skated to a sleepy second period, with neither team scoring.
The Gulls found their way back on the scoreboard at 1:08 of the third period with a five-on-three power-play goal by Mark Pederson, who tucked in a shot from the right post after a set of passes from R.J. Enga and Clayton Read, respectively. The goal was Pederson's eighth of the season.
The Gull's party was short-lived however, when just over a minute later, DeLuis took home a rebound in front of the net with Koenig down to even the score at two. Mathers earned his second point of the game and 11th of the season with an assist.
The Gulls missed a golden opportunity to win the game late in the third period when Dennis Purdie was stoned by Friesen on a streaking breakaway.
The first round of the shootout ended with a 2-2 tie, prompting a second round with Garrow scoring the winning goal.
Notes: Jamie Black did not skate tonight because of an ankle injury suffered in the Nov. 17 game against Anchorage... The Gulls play six out of the next seven games on home ice... Goaltender Donoven Scooter Henson signed with the Gulls for today... Goaltender Cris Classen is expected to sign with the Gulls later this week... Newcomer Cory Cyrenne remains on injured reserve... Curtis Cruickshank, Michael Lanthier and Aaron Plumb were released last week... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...
San Diego returns to action Friday at the Sports Arena, facing off against the Bakersfield Condors at 7 p.m. The game will feature the third annual "Teddy Bear Toss," presented by San Diego Harley-Davidson.
