SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Gulls attempt to beat the Fresno Falcons for the first time this season and climb back to the .500. The winner of tonight's game will take sole possession of third place in the West Coast Hockey League and be one point out of second place.
San Diego and Fresno have met three times this season with the Falcons taking all three. The two last met Tuesday, Nov. 19 in Fresno where Terry Friesen and Mark Gowan combined for a 2-0 shutout over the Blue and Orange.
Both the Gulls and Falcons are tied for third place heading into action tonight. They trail the front-running Idaho Steelheads by 11 points and the sizzling Bakersfield Condors by three points.
Including tonight, the Gulls play six out of their next eight games on home ice... Dean Tiltgen and R.J. Enga are tied for 11th in league scoring with 15 points apiece... Tiltgen is third with nine goals. He has five points in three games against Fresno this season... Trevor Koenig is fourth in the WCHL with a 2.20 goals against average. He's played in a league-high 14 games... San Diego's power play is fifth overall, but second (22 percent) at home...
After blanking the Gulls last week, the Falcons got swept in a two-game weekend series in Idaho, where they got out-scored 8-1... They are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games... Kris Porter is fifth in the WCHL with 18 points and tied with Tiltgen for third with nine goals... Brad Both is the league leader with 148 penalty minutes. He's received at least one penalty in all 15 games he's played... Fresno plays 14 of its next 18 on the road...
The Gulls return to action Friday against the Bakersfield Condors at 7 p.m. The game will feature the third annual "Teddy Bear Toss," presented by San Diego Harley-Davidson.
