Dunedin Blue Jays News Release
TAMPA, FL - 3B Emilio Guerrero smashed two timely home runs late in Saturday night's game to lift the Dunedin Blue Jays (2-1) over the Tampa Yankees (1-2) in extra innings. Guerrero supplied a game tying three-run blast in the eighth and a solo bomb in the 12th to take the rubber match 6-5.
The Jays jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the top of the first when 1B L.B. Dantzler lined a two-run double to right field against Yankees' starter RHP Will Carter. Dunedin held a narrow 2-1 lead until the sixth inning, where Tampa jumped out in front.
RHP Justin Shafer pitched well over his 6.2 innings for Dunedin, but was the victim of a few bad breaks and bounces. After a pair of singles to begin the sixth, RF Austin Aune grounded out to advance each runner 90 feet. A wild pitch brought home the tying run, and SS Abiatal Avelino pulled a groundball to short where SS Richard Urena came home, attempting to cut down the go-ahead run. The throw beat 3B Thairo Estrada to the plate, but was off line which allowed the run to score.
An inning later, Estrada pulled a line drive into left field where LF Ryan McBroom attempted to lay out to make an inning-ending catch. The ball popped out of his glove, giving Tampa a 5-2 lead.
After the first two batters reached base in the top of the eighth against RHP Dillon McNamara, Guerrero stepped to the plate and obliterated his pitch down the left field line, tying the game at five. From there the bullpens held serve until the 12th. LHP Alonzo Gonzalez fanned five in 2.1 which paved the way for RHP Carlos Ramirez (W, 3-0).
With two outs in the 12th, Guerrero pelted his second home run of the game, this time to left-center, giving Dunedin a 6-5 lead. Ramirez locked down his three frames, including the bottom of the 12th, extending his scoreless streak to 21.1 innings. CF Jonathan Davis extended his on-base streak to 25 games.
Dunedin will commute to Lakeland beginning Sunday with a 1 PM game. RHP Conner Greene dons the mound for Dunedin taking on former Blue Jays' LHP Jairo Labourt. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
