Guerrero Joins Shrimp on Rehab Assignment

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a transaction that impacts their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp roster prior to tonight's game against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at Blue Wahoos Stadium at 7:05 p.m. eastern.

Miami Marlins right-handed relief pitcher Tayron Guerrero has joined the Jumbo Shrimp on a major league rehab assignment. Guerrero was placed on Miami's disabled list on July 5, retroactive to July 4, with a left lumbar strain. Prior to his injury, Guerrero was 1-2 with a 4.28 ERA in 41 relief outings for the Marlins, with 54 strikeouts in his 40 innings of work.

This is the first year for Guerrero in the majors with the Marlins, and he did appear in one game for the San Diego Padres in 2016. That summer he was traded to the Marlins along with Andrew Cashner and Colin Rea in exchange for Jarred Cosart, Carter Capps, Luis Castillo, and Josh Naylor. Guerrero pitched parts of the last two seasons for Jacksonville, going 1-1 with a 1.93 ERA with four saves in 12 outings in 2016. With the Jumbo Shrimp last year, Guerrero was 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in 17 relief outings.

Guerrero, 27, is a native of Boca Chica, Colombia, and grew up on the small island of Isla Tierra Bomba. Guerrero's story of going from the island by boat to the only baseball field in the area and then walking two hours through a snake-infested jungle to get back home made headlines this offseason.

The Jumbo Shrimp roster stands at 25 active players, and a revised roster is attached.

The Jumbo Shrimp continue their series in Pensacola at 7:35 p.m. Saturday, when Jacksonville right-hander Merandy Gonzalez (1-4) is scheduled to face Blue Wahoos right-hander Daniel Wright (4-6). The Jumbo Shrimp return home to face Montgomery on Monday, July 23, at 7 p.m. Gates open at 6 p.m. for VyStar Credit Union Charity Begins at Home with Mission House raising funds through ticket sales and the Launch-A-Ball promotion. VyStar Credit Union members can get a buy-3-get-1 free ticket special by showing their VyStar credit or debit card at the box office. Half-Price Yuengling Monday means 16-oz. Yuengling cans are half-price, and Dollar Dog Night offers $1 hot dogs. For Wear Your Favorite Jersey Night, anyone wearing a jersey will receive $2 off a game day ticket at the box office.
