Knoxville Smokies News Release
BILOXI, MS - The Tennessee Smokies lost a 4-1 contest with the Biloxi Shuckers on Saturday night in Biloxi. Tennessee loaded the bases in the eighth inning but did not push any runs across.
Biloxi opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom of the second that made it 2-0 Shuckers. Tennessee scored its first run of the game when Eddy Martinez hit a solo home run to left field in the fifth inning. It was the eighth home run of the season for Martinez and his second of the series.
The Shuckers extended their lead in the sixth inning, scoring two runs on an RBI-double that made it 4-1. The Smokies loaded the bases in the eighth inning, as Charcer Burks singled, followed by walks drawn by Zack Short and Martinez. A fly out would end the inning, however, and Biloxi would get out of the inning without any damage done.
Matt Swarmer made the start on the mound for Tennessee. Swarmer pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four runs on five hits and no walks. He also struck out seven in the start. Swarmer was relieved by Zach Hedges to start the seventh inning. Hedges threw the final 2.0 innings for the Smokies, allowing two hits and one walk. He did not allow any runs while striking out two.
Tennessee and Biloxi will conclude the series with a game at 5:05 p.m. on Sunday. Thomas Hatch (6-4, 4.17 ERA) is projected to start for the Smokies. Hatch is coming off a no decision (5.0 IP, 6ER) against Birmingham on July 15. He is holding right handed batters to a .243 average this season.
