Rockford RiverHawks News Release
Gary's Cristian Guerrero hit five home runs on Wednesday as the RailCats swept the Rockford RiverHawks, 9-5 and 15-2, in a doubleheader at Road Ranger Stadium.
Rockford's Jason James homered in each end of the doubleheader, in front of a season-high sellout crowd of 3,426.
Guerrero homered in five consecutive plate appearances and drove in eight runs in the sweep. He homered in each of his first three at-bats in the nightcap to become the first RailCat in the team's nine-year history to go yard three times in a single game.
In the opener, Gary took a 6-0 lead in the middle innings. The RailCats scored five times in the fourth. Louis Ott tripled in a run and scored on Tanner Townsend's single. John Parham added a three-run homer. Rockford starter Kyle Ruwe (0-3) did not return for the fifth inning. Guerrero hit a solo home run in the fifth inning.
The RiverHawks rallied for four runs, two on a James homer to right field, in the bottom of the fifth and drove starter Brad Halsey out after 4 2/3 innings. Reliever James Baker (1-1) received credit for the win.
In the nightcap, Gary took an early 3-0 lead on a pair of Guerrero homers - a two-run shot to right-center in the first inning and a solo shot to left in the third.
Gary starter Zach McClellan (1-2) struck out seven in five innings for the win. Rockford starter Roger Lincoln (1-2) did not survive a six-run Gary fifth inning and took the loss.
Gary has won six of its last eight games. Rockford has dropped nine of 11.
The series moves to Gary for the finale, scheduled for 7 p.m. Thursday. The RiverHawks return home this weekend for a three-game series against Joliet. The series opener is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Friday and features Upper Iowa University/Metro Medical "Big Hurt" Bobblehead Doll Night. It's also the Friday Fish Fry and Road Ranger Free Gas Friday, when random fans will win gas cards.
