GREENVILLE, SC â The Greenville Grrrowl of the ECHL, proud affiliates of the Chicago Blackhawks and Edmonton Oilers, have announced the signing of two players to Standard Player Contracts for the 2004-05 season. Veteran forward JASON NORRIE, and rookie defenseman JOEY MARTIN have agreed to terms with the Grrrowl and will be in camp in October.
JASON NORRIE (6-3, 205lbs., forward, Calgary, ALTA) has played in 393 professional games, including the final 15 regular season games, plus an additional 8 playoff games, with the Peoria Rivermen in 2003-04. In 66 ECHL games last year, NORRIE totaled 35 points (14G, 21A), and 129 penalty minutes. The 2002-03 was Jason's best statistical season with 49 points (24G, 25A) and 194 penalty minutes in 78 games between Baton Rouge and Cincinnati.
JOEY MARTIN (6-3, 225lbs., defenseman, Rogers, MN) is a recent graduate of the University of Minnesota, and was a member of back-to-back NCAA Championship teams in 2002 and 2003. MARTIN was a 6th round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2000 NHL Entry Draft, and competed for four seasons with the Gophers. Most recently, MARTIN competed in the Chicago Blackhawks Prospects Camp that was held in early July, just after this years' NHL draft. During his senior season, MARTIN was a part of the "Fab Five" of Minnesota hockey, with all five being NHL draft picks.
"We are very happy with the additions of both Jason Norrie and Joey Martin," stated Grrrowl Head Coach and VP of Hockey Operations, John Marks. "Jason has had a very successful professional career and brings a great deal of experience, leadership and ability to our team. He is one of most respected players in this league, and we will be expecting a lot from him as we rebuild this program. Joey Martin is a young man that we saw at the Chicago prospects camp, and he made a huge impression on a lot of NHL and AHL folks. He is one that stood out in a crowd, and we believe we have a big, strong, talented defenseman that has the potential to make a big impact in this league."
The current list of signed players for the 2004-05 season includes 12 players: Forwards â Mark Concannon, Troy Ilijow, Richard Naumann, Mike Nelson, Colin Pepperall, Russell Spence, Jason Norrie; Defense â Randy Dagenais, Paul Esdale, Jason Metcalfe, Daryl Pierce, Joey Martin.
