Groove Coaches Invite Three Players From Open Tryout To Training Camp

Greenville, SC – Defending League Champion Greenville Groove has selected three players from open tryouts, held on October 19th and 20th at Hillcrest High School, to join the 2002 Groove Training Camp. Allen Phillips, Christian Anderson, and Ty Shine were all selected based on their excellent performance earlier in the month.

Phillips and Anderson were among the fifty-three participants who arrived on Saturday morning, fighting for a spot on the callback roster of day two. The two were part of the group of 18 players invited back for day two of tryouts. On Sunday, Ty Shine, joined the ranks as one of the 16 invited players to tryouts.

Phillips, a native of Little Rock, Arkansas, attended Southwest Missouri State. The 6'5 guard graduated in May of 2002 with a degree in Recreational Therapy.

Christian Anderson, 6'5, was born in Germany. He attended Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. Anderson played in Switzerland and Germany during the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons respectively.

Ty Shine joins the Groove Training Camp as 2002 graduate of Seton Hall University. He completed his degree in communications. The 6'1 guard is a native of Augusta, Georgia.

Each of the eight NBDL teams were permitted to invite up to three players from open tryouts into their training camps which begin on November 2nd. The coaches recommended up to three players from their respective tryouts to the NBDL League Office for contract consideration. Pending league approval, teams announced any athletes selected from the open tryouts.

"It will be interesting to see how these guys stack up against the other guys we have in our training camp," adds Groove Head Coach Tree Rollins. "There is a lot of hidden basketball talent in the world; Coach Ready and I may have discovered some right here in the upstate of South Carolina."
