October 30, 2002 - NBA G League (G League)
Columbus Riverdragons News Release
COLUMBUS, Ga., October 30, 2002 - The Columbus Riverdragons have been allocated a pair of University of Georgia Bulldogs, including 6-foot guard D.A. Layne and 6-foot-10 center Terrell Bell, NBDL Executive Director Karl Hicks announced today.
Layne and Bell join point guard Sean Peterson of Georgia Southern University and forward Carl Mitchell of Northern Kentucky University to give the Riverdragons their league allotment of four allocated players as the team enters training camp this Sunday, November 3 in Columbus.
In accordance with NBDL policy, one of the Riverdragons four allocated players must make the team's 2002-03 roster. Last season, guard Saul Smith made the Riverdragons 2001-02 roster as an allocated player, finishing the season ranked third in the league in three-point shooting.
Layne, an early entry candidate in the 2001 NBA Draft, played three seasons (1998-99 â 2000-01) in Athens finishing his collegiate career ranked ninth on UGA's career scoring list with 1,451 points (15.8 ppg). Layne also reigns as the school's all-time leader in three-point field goals made with 231.
As a junior, Layne, started all 31 games, averaging 16.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 3.5 assists on his way to being named named First Team All-SEC by the Associated Press.
Most recently, the former high school standout from Marietta played professionally overseas for Menorca Basquet in the Spanish LEB League where he averaged 18.8 points in 15 games.
Bell played four seasons at UGA from 1992-93 â 1995-96. The Athens native blocked 168 shots over his career including a team-high 83 blocks as a starter his senior year.
Since being selected in the second round (50th pick overall) of the 1996 NBA Draft by the Houston Rockets, Bell has logged five seasons of pro basketball experience including stops in the ABA 2000 (Memphis), the CBA, Turkey, and Spain. Bell also spent time in the Los Angeles Clippers training camp in 1999.
The majority of the Riverdragons training camp invitees will come from the 2002 NBDL Player Draft, which will take place over 14 rounds and be conducted via conference call from locations in each of the eight NBDL markets beginning at 5 p.m. on Halloween. The Riverdragons will make their selections in front of fans at Milan's Italian Eatery at the Riverdragons 2002 NBDL Draft Party.
