NORMAL, Ill. - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, gave up a home run by a Bloomington native as the game's only run in a 1-0 Gateway Grizzlies win on Thursday night at GCS Ballpark.
Blake Brown put the Grizzlies on the board in the fourth inning to open the scoring with a home run over the big wall in left field.
The CornBelters drew walks to Nolan Meadows and Dylan Kelly in the ninth inning, but Grizzlies closer JaVaun West registered two strikeouts and a ground out to end the game.
Trevor Richards (1-1) picked up the win with six innings of four-hit work, giving up two walks with two strikeouts. Mike Schweiss (1-2) took the loss, also working six innings with seven hits, one walk and eight strikeouts. West picked up his fourth save.
The St. Louis-area road trip shifts to the Missouri side for a three-game weekend series with the River City Rascals. The Belters send lefty Max Homick (0-2, 6.75 ERA) to the hill against Rascals lefty Jason Ziegler (1-0, 5.40). Broadcast time on WJBC.com is 6:20 with the first pitch at CarShield Field set for 6:35.
