Grizzlies fall to Miners

SAUGET, Ill.- The Gateway Grizzlies dropped the middle game of a three-game series 6-2 to the Southern Illinois Miners Saturday night at GCS Ballpark.

The loss eliminates the Grizzlies (53-40) from the 2010 post-season picture. The River City Rascals claimed the final playoff spot with a win over the Evansville Otters in O'Fallon, Mo.

Southern Illinois (64-31) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI double by Todd Martin. Tyler Heil tied the game for the Grizzlies in the bottom of the inning with an RBI single. Matty Johnson scored on the hit, after reaching on an error to lead off the inning.

Jereme Milons and Brendan Akashian hit back-to-back two out homers in the fifth to extend the Miners' lead to 4-1. All three runs in the inning were unearned thanks to an error.

Akashian finished the night 4 for 4 with two doubles, a single, the home run and two RBIs for Southern Illinois.

The Grizzlies got a two-out RBI double from Matt Sanders in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead to 4-2. The Miners added two more runs in the seventh against Grizzlies starter Tim Clubb. One of the runs was unearned. Clubb (8-6) took the loss, allowing all six runs, two earned, on 10 hits. He did not walk a batter and struck out three.

Jacinto Gonell, David Miller, Eric Gilliland and Nick Walters combined to throw 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Grizzlies managed just five hits against four Southern Illinois pitchers. Heil and Sanders each finished 1 for 3 with an RBI. Jareck West was 2 for 4 with a run scored.

The Grizzlies finish out the 2010 season Sunday evening against the Miners. First pitch is set for 6:05 pm.
