Gateway Grizzlies News Release
Gateway Grizzlies manager Phil Warren was busy again this year at the Frontier League's annual tryout and draft, held Monday and Tuesday at Washington's Consol Energy Park.
The Grizzlies selected a pair of left-handed pitchers but traded one before the end of the day. Warren drafted LHP Eddie Martinez in the second round, but then dealt the pitcher to Slippery Rock for former Grizzlies catcher Jason Arrowood.
Arrowood played with the Grizzlies last season, before being picked up by Slippery Rock in this year's expansion draft. Arrowood appeared in 67 games in 2006 for the Grizzlies. He hit .260 with a pair of home runs and 20 RBIs. He was an All-Star last season.
In the third round, the Grizzlies selected 24-year old left-hander Gabe Eikum who played college baseball at Division III Northwestern in Minnesota. Eikum, 6-0, 190, appeared in nine games in 2006. He was 3-5 with a 3.28 earned run average. He tossed six complete games and had one shutout. He walked just 20 while striking out 67 in 57.2 innings. Eikum appeared in one game last season with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association.
"Gabe is a lefty specialty guy," Warren said. "You can always use a guy like that. He will compete for a spot in the bullpen."
Eikum and Arrowood will join other hopefuls in Grizzlies Spring Training camp, which begins at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning at GCS Ballpark.
Opening Night is May 23rd against Southern Illinois. Game time is 7:05 p.m. at GCS Ballpark.
Tickets are currently available for Opening Night and any game throughout the 2007 season. Tickets may be purchased by calling the Grizzlies at 618-337-3000, visiting the GCS Ballpark box office, or online at gatewaygrizzlies.com.
