
Beach Bums Add Three Players Via Frontier League Draft

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. - The Traverse City Beach Bums added three rookie players to their roster via the Frontier League draft, held at the conclusion of the league's tryout camp at the CONSOL Energy Park, home of the Washington Wild Things, on Tuesday.
Picking eighth in each round, the Beach Bums added Pitcher Dennis Lane, First Baseman/Outfielder Kevin Nichol, and Catcher Josh Hayes. The three players will join the Beach Bums for spring training and bring the total number of individuals on the roster to 26. The Frontier League maximum roster size is 24 while the minimum number is 22.
Dennis Lane was chosen by the Beach Bums in the first round (Eighth overall). Lane stands at 6-4 and is a right-handed hurler. He graduated in 2006 from Coppin State University in Baltimore, Md. Lane pitched in 20 games while making 10 starts. He finished second on the team with 54 strikeouts in the third most innings (68.1).
With the second round choice (19th overall), the Beach Bums tabbed Kevin Nichol. Nichol played collegiately at Lynchburg College, an NCAA Division III school in Lynchburg, Virginia. As a senior, Nichol finished second on the 23-15 Hornets with four homers. He batted .268 and also connected on two triples in his 26 appearances.
The Beach Bums final choice was Josh Hayes in the third round (28th overall). Hayes just concluded his career at Notre Dame College, an NAIA institution, on Thursday May 3. As a junior he posted the third highest batting average in school history at .358. In his final season he played in 38 contests and committed only two errors.
The Traverse City Beach Bums will begin spring training tomorrow. The second season of play starts on the road at Kalamazoo on May 23. Wuerfel Park opens its gates for the first time on May 25, 2007 as the same Kalamazoo Kings visit for a 7:05 pm contest. The Beach Bums will play a 96 game schedule with 51 home games at Wuerfel Park, named "Best minor league ballpark in Michigan" by AAA Living magazine.
