Morehead City Marlins News Release
MOREHEAD CITY, N.C. - The Gastonia Grizzlies (5-10) topped the Morehead City Marlins (4-12) in a back-and-forth tilt Thursday evening in Morehead City by a score of 5-4.
Dario Santangelo issued two walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch in the top of the eighth inning, allowing pinch-runner Reid Mathews to score from third base and give the Grizzlies a 5-4 lead.
Gastonia scored the first two runs of the game, plating one in the fourth inning and one more in the fifth inning. The Marlins stormed back with three of their own in the sixth, however. With one out, Ryan Cranmer and Matt Anderson laced back-to-back singles before Sal Annunziata's double to right field scored both of them. Annunziata then scored himself when Sam Ott ripped a single to left-center field making the score 3-2 in favor of the Marlins.
In the seventh inning the Grizzlies answered, when Tanner Bryant singled and Billy Urban reached on a hit-by-pitch. Bryce Beeler then layed down a bunt which Marlins' pitcher A.J. Goetz threw errantly to third base, allowing both runners to score and the Grizzlies to take a 4-3 lead.
In the bottom of the seventh, Brandon Bass singled and advanced to second on a single by Chad Shannon. After a sacrifice bunt by Geoff DeGroot advanced both runners, Cranmer recorded his second hit of the game, scoring Brandon Bass third base.
Patrick Stanley (1-2) earned this win in relief, tossing 1 2/3 innings of scoreless ball while striking out three. Dale Innes notched his first save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning while Santangelo (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing one run in two full innings.
Cranmer and Ott led the way for Morehead City, each with two hits, an RBI and a stolen base. Shannon also picked up a multi-hit day while Drew Woodall reached base safely twice with a single and a walk.
The Marlins travel back to Virginia for the second time in three days as they take on the Petersburg Generals for two seven-inning games as part of a double header. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. with the live broadcast on CPL WebPass beginning approximately 10 minutes prior to first pitch.
