Utah Grizzlies News Release
West Valley City, Utah - Utah Grizzlies Head Coach and Director of Hockey Operations Kevin Colley announced today that the team has acquired the rights to defenseman David Schulz and future considerations (a player to be named later) from the Greenville Road Warriors in exchange for the rights to goaltender Dov Grumet-Morris.
Schulz, 24 and six-foot-four, split the last two seasons between the ECHL's Johnstown Chiefs and the American Hockey League in Lake Erie and Rochester. He has appeared in the AHL in his first full three seasons and was drafted by the Vancouver Canucks in the eighth round of the 2004 NHL Entry Draft. Schulz spent the 2007-2008 season with the ECHL's Texas Wildcatters totaling a plus-26 and 28 points (eight goals, 20 assists) in 49 games as the club went on to a 52-9-0-11 record.
The Grizzlies also expect to receive a top caliber forward from Greenville sometime between now and July 1, 2011. Grumet-Morris signed with Utah last summer, but left for Europe early in training camp. Utah opted to retain his rights July 1 in the event that he chose to return to the ECHL.
"We are pleased that strategically protecting the rights to Grumet-Morris resulted in us acquiring a top defenseman and are excited for what the future considerations will bring as well," said Colley. "Schulz was part of a championship level team in Texas during his rookie season and he understands the components that make up a winning locker room."
The Grizzlies open the 2010-2011 season Friday, October 15 in Alaska with the home opener being Friday, October 22 when Utah welcomes Bakersfield to Maverik Center for a 7:05 p.m. start. Season ticket packages starting at $7 a game for seven games are available through the Grizzlies corporate office by calling (801) 988-8000. Visit www.utahgrizzlies.com for more information.
