SLIPPERY ROCK, PA (June 11, 2007)-In order to pick up his second win of the season, Slippery Rock Sliders pitcher Derek Griffith needed to maintain control of the strike zone while benefiting from timely offense by his teammates. Both happened on Monday night at Jack Critchfield Park as the Sliders defeated the Chillicothe Paints, 4-3.

Losers of five of their past six games, the Sliders knew that they needed to put together a strong offensive performance in their first game at home in more than a week.

Right fielder Jason Curry hit a homerun to right field in the bottom of the 2nd inning to give the Sliders the early lead. The Paints responded in the top of the 3rd after a throwing error by Sliders third baseman Phil Butch. Butch went 0-2 and scored a run in the win.

The score remained tied until second baseman Cy Donald put the Sliders ahead for good with a triple to right-center field that brought home two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Sliders added a run in the fifth. The Sliders held the lead until the Paints scored two runs off of Griffith in the top of the sixth inning. Paints short stop Travis Garcia went 2-4 with a run scored in the loss.

Griffith checked out in the 6th inning, giving up three runs, two of which were earned. Griffith surrendered four walks in the game, and was able to pitch out of several jams early in the game, including a bases loaded jam in the second inning to pick up his second win of the season.

Reliever Pete Parise pitched 2 1/3 innings scoreless. Greg Lasinki left two runners on base in the top of the ninth inning to pick up his fifth save of the season. Luke Palmer picked up the loss for the Paints, surrendering four runs on eight hits in six innings. Palmer recorded nine strikeouts against Sliders' hitters on Monday.

The Sliders will attempt to sweep the two-game series Tuesday afternoon when RHP Nick Tracy takes the hill against Paints' starter, RHP Perry Cunningham. First pitch is set for 12:05.
