
Griffin and Lugo Named to All-Star Team

Harlingen, TX - Harlingen WhiteWings catcher Kevin Griffin and left-handed starting pitcher Jorge Lugo will be United League All-Stars for the second-straight year as voted on by the field managers and broadcasters.
Griffin is in the midst of a career-year. The Roanoke, Virginia, native was in the top-10 in hitting for most of the year, and currently sits at .344 with a team-high 15 doubles, two triples, two home runs and 26 RBI. He's tied for the team-lead with 37 runs scored and leads the way with a .421 on-base percentage. The 26-year old is one of only four WhiteWings to play in at least 50 games, 45 of which have come from behind the plate. Griffin is fourth in the league with 14 stolen bases.
Griffin had a 21-game on-base streak dating back to August 13th snapped on May 29th. During that span Griffin was on base 51.1% of the time. During the first-half, Griffin was ninth in the league with a .354 batting average while leading the team with 14 doubles, 33 runs scored, 12 stolen bases and a .491 on-base percentage.
Lugo is fifth in the league with a 4.14 ERA. The Harlingen resident is 3-2 in ten starts. He's tied for fifth in the league with 65 strikeouts in 59 innings. Opponents are hitting just .224 against the 25-year old Lugo.
The Zulia, Venezuela, native has lasted at least five innings in all but one start, going a season-high seven-innings in back-to-back home wins against Amarillo on May 31st and San Angelo on June 5th. He struck out a season-high 11 against Amarillo, and eight more against San Angelo. Lugo has struck out at least seven hitters in six starts this season.
The All-Star game will pit the best the United League has to offer against the Golden League All-Stars in San Angelo on July 15th at 7:05 p.m.
