San Jose SaberCats News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. (Mar. 4, 2004) â San Jose SaberCats' quarterback Mark Grieb was today named the Arena Football League's âBaby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Month' after directing his club to a 3-0 record by throwing just 12 incomplete passes for the month.
Grieb (6-3, 208, UC Davis), in his seventh AFL season, earned Baby Ruth Real Deal Offensive Player of the Month by completing 45-of-57 (78.9%) passes for 568 yards, 14 TDs and no INTs for the undefeated SaberCats (3-0). The 2002 Offensive Player of the Year, who is also the AFL's career leader in pass efficiency, leads the AFL with a passer rating of 147.8.
The former Aggie's standout performance came in San Jose's 61-55 victory over rival Los Angeles when he set a team game record by completing 85.7 percent of his passes (18-of-21) for 6 TDs and no INTs. Grieb completed 15-of-19 passes in a season opening win at Detroit and was equally efficient in the SaberCats' home opening win over Grand Rapids on Feb. 28. In three quarters of action he completed 12-of-17 for 213 yards and six touchdowns in a 62-31 win.
This marks the second time in his career Grieb has earned an AFL monthly honor. He was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Month in May 2002.
Other monthly award winners include Chicago Rush offensive/defensive lineman John Moyer (ADT Defensive Player), New Orleans VooDoo fullback/linebacker Dan Curran (U.S. Army Ironman), Orlando Predators quarterback Joe Hamilton (Rookie) and Los Angeles Avengers kicker Remy Hamilton (Kicker).
The SaberCats travel to New York to battle former head coach Todd Shell and his Dragons in a regionally televised NBC game on Sunday, March 7. Game time is 9:00 a.m. (PT). San Jose returns home for the first of three straight games on Sunday, March 14, when former quarterback and ArenaBowl XVI MVP John Dutton leads the Colorado Crush into HP Pavilion. Kickoff for that game is slated for 5:00 p.m. and tickets can be purchased at all Northern California TicketMaster outlets, on-line at www.ticketmaster.com, or in person at the HP Pavilion box office.
