Orlando Predators News Release

ORLANDO, Fla. (March 4, 2004) -- Any concerns the Orlando Predators may have had about playing a rookie quarterback are quickly dissipating as Joe Hamilton was named Arena Football League’s Rookie of the Month for February.

Hamilton, the former Heisman trophy runner-up from Georgia Tech, played in three games. For the month, he completed 63.7% of his passes for 778 yards, 15 touchdowns and no interceptions.

“Joe’s off to an excellent start in his AFL career,” Head Coach Jay Gruden said. “By necessity, he has been on a real steep learning curve but he’s handled everything we have asked him to do. The thing that is most exciting is that Joe isn’t anywhere near as good as he’s going to be.”

Hamilton’s top game came last week in a road win over Carolina, where he led the Predators to touchdowns on eight of nine possessions. He completed 19 of 29 passes (65.5%) for 212 yards and a career-high six touchdowns. Hamilton also ran for two touchdowns.

The former Tampa Bay Bucs quarterback also threw for 296 yards and five touchdowns in an overtime loss to Austin and had 270 yards and four touchdowns in his Arena Football League debut against the Tampa Bay Storm on Feb. 8.

He edged out kicker Dan Frantz of San Jose and WR/LB Etu Moldin for Rookie of the Month honors.

In other announcements, the Arena Football League named San Jose quarterback Mark Grieb as “Offensive Player of the Month,” Chicago lineman John Moyer was “Defensive Player of the Month,” Mew Orleans FB/LB Dan Curran was “Ironman of the Month” and Los Angeles’ Remy Hamilton was “Kicker of the Month.”
