Led by their pitching coach Evan Greusel the Calgary Vipers defeated the Victoria Seals 7-3 before 2184 fans at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. Greusel (6-2) pitched beautifully for the Vipers going seven innings and striking out ten batters without walking one. Greusel celebrates his 30th birthday tomorrow and gave up three runs on seven hits while throwing 96 pitches with 69 of them being strikes. The Vipers jumped out to an early 5-0 lead and after the lead was trimmed to two tallies Calgary added two insurance runs in the eighth inning for the victory. With the win the Snakes are 20-9 in the second half and six games ahead of Edmonton for first place in the North Division. Overall the Vipers are 46-22 for the top mark in the Golden Baseball League.
Mac Suzuki (11) recorded the save in coming into the game with the tying run on deck and retiring the only two batters he faced including a strikeout. Andrew DeMott and Todd Moser also made scoreless appearances for the Vipers coming out of the bullpen. James Garcia (3-4) picked up his third straight loss against Calgary in giving up seven runs in seven and two-third innings.
At the plate the Snakes where led by Jorge Mejia who went three-for-four with two runs scored on one batted in.
Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Kevin Price and Sergio Pedroza walked, Kit Pellow was hit by a pitch, and Colin Moro singled home two for a 2-0 lead.
The Vipers doubled their lead in the second inning to 4-0 as Caonabo Cosme walked, Jorge Mejia doubled, Fehlandt Lentini plated Cosme and moved Mejia to third base with a run batted in groundout, and with two outs Kit Pellow delivered a clutch RBI base hit.
Another run was added to the Vipers' lead in the third frame as Drew Miller doubled and scored on a Mejia RBI two-base hit for a 5-0 advantage.
Victoria responded in the bottom of the fourth inning as Brian Rios singled, Matt Kavanaugh doubled in one, and Brett Flowers lined a two-run homer for a 5-3 score.
In the top of the eighth Calgary increased their lead to 7-3 when Mejia singled, stole second base, Price reached base for a fourth time with a free pass, with two Pedroza knocked in a run with a base hit, and Price scored on a fielding error to increase the lead to four runs.
Pedroza continued his stellar defensive play for the Snakes in the bottom of the eighth frame as with a runner at second a single was hit his way which he fielded and promptly threw the runner out at the plate with a perfectly accurate one-hopper.
This three game series against the Seals continues on Saturday August 22nd at 8:05 PM MDT and Sunday August 23rd at 2:35 PM MDT. Erik Dessau (8-3, 5.76) and Dallas Mahan (2-3, 3.44) will pitch for Calgary in the two contests.
Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Tuesday August 25th, Wednesday August 26th, and Thursday August 27th all at 7:05 PM MDT for their final regular season home games of the season with the Edmonton Capitals in town. Tuesday will be "Toque Night" where Vipers' toques will be handed out at the game while on Wednesday it will be "Grey Eagle Casino Night" at the ballpark.
For the third straight year the Vipers have qualified for the playoffs and will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium.
