Calgary Vipers News Release


The Calgary Vipers gave up 11 runs in the first inning in being defeated 13-8 by the Victoria Seals before 3633 fans at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria, British Columbia. After scoring three runs in the top of the frame the Vipers saw 14 batters come to the plate in an inning where five Seals walked and two three-run homers were hit. Calgary did hit three home runs in the game but also walked ten batters and committed four errors. With the loss the Snakes drop to 20-10 in the second half for a five and a half game lead in the North Division. Overall the Vipers are 46-23 for the top record in the Golden Baseball League.

Erik Dessau (8-4) took the loss in giving up seven runs and five walks in a third of an innings. Brian Oliver threw two innings out of the bullpen for the Vipers without giving up an earned run while Travis Hughes tossed one inning without giving up an earned run. Eduardo Baeza (5-9) won the ballgame in pitching five innings and giving up seven runs.

At the plate the Vipers were led by Caonabo Cosme who had two home runs and three hits in total. Nelson Castro went two-for-four on the night with two runs batted in to moved him batting average up to .401.

Calgary jumped onto the scoreboard in the top of the first inning as Fehlandt Lentini double for a league high 29th time, Nelson Castro switched spots with him with a run batted in two-base hit, and Sergio Pedroza hit his first home run as a Viper and 16th overall for a 3-0 lead.

Victoria responded right back in the bottom of the frame as Wilver Perez, Matt Kavanaugh, Jamar Hill, and Josh Arhart all walked to score a run. Brian Rios followed with a sacrifice fly and Gabriel Riley hit a three-run big fly. Brett Flowers followed with a double, Bret Levier walked, Billy Krause reached on a throwing error to load the bases, Perez walked for a RBI, Kavanaugh singled in two, and Hill capped the inning with a three-run long ball for a 11-3 advantage.

The Vipers got a couple runs back in the next half inning for a 11-5 score as Caonabo Cosme hit his sixth home run of the season, Lentini double for a second time in the game, moved to third on a fielding error, and scored on a Castro run batted in groundout.

In the top of the fourth Calgary continued to chip away at the lead as Cosme hit his second long ball of the night and on the very next pitch Jorge Mejia went deep for a sixth time on the season for a 11-7 score.

A run was added to the Seals lead in the bottom of the seventh frame as Riley walked, Levier doubled, and Riley scored on a passed ball for a 12-7 advantage.

Victoria tacked on another run in the eighth inning for a 13-7 score as Kavanaugh reached on a fielding error, Hill and Takashi Miyoshi walked to load the bases, and Kavanaugh scored on a wild pitch.

Calgary closed out the scoring in the top of the ninth at 13-8 as Lentini and Pedroza walked and Kit Pellow drove in a run with a base hit.

This three game series against the Seals concludes on Sunday August 23rd at 2:35 PM MDT with Dallas Mahan (2-3, 3.44) on the mound.

Calgary returns home to Foothills Stadium on Tuesday August 25th, Wednesday August 26th, and Thursday August 27th all at 7:05 PM MDT for their final regular season home games of the season with the Edmonton Capitals in town. Tuesday will be "Toque Night" where Vipers' toques will be handed out at the game while on Wednesday it will be "Grey Eagle Casino Night" at the ballpark.

For the third straight year the Vipers have qualified for the playoffs and will host Game 3 of the North Division Championship Series on Friday September 4th at 7:05 PM MDT. If necessary Games 4 & 5 will be held on Saturday September 5th at 4:00 PM MDT and Sunday September 6th at 3:00 PM MDT also at Foothills Stadium.
