Victoria Seals News Release

Victoria, BC - Opening their final home series of the year on Friday night, the Victoria Seals took on the Calgary Vipers in game one of a three game set. With the North Division leaders turning to Evan Greusel (5-2) for the start, the Seals responded with James Garcia (3-3) in the teams' 19th meeting this season.

The Vipers opened the scoring early on, jumping out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning when both Kevin Price and Sergio Pedroza drew walks before Kit Pellow was hit by a pitch to the load the bases, and Colin Moro drove in a pair with a bloop single to right field.

Calgary then doubled their advantage in the top of the second, using a lead-off walk to Caonabo Cosme along with a double from Jorge Mejia to set up an RBI groundout off the bat of Fehlandt Lentini before Pellow made it 4-0 on an RBI base hit. Adding to their lead once again in the third, a double courtesy of Drew Miller propelled the Vipers to a five-run lead when a two-out extra base hit from Mejia brought the runner home.

Victoria finally got to Greusel with a flurry of offense in the bottom of the fourth inning, kicked off by a Brian Rios base hit. Then, after Matt Kavanaugh got the Seals on the board with an RBI double, a two-run blast off the scoreboard from Brett Flowers pulled the home side within two, a 5-3 score.

With the game shifting to the eighth after three scoreless innings on the back of excellent pitching from both starters, Calgary again extended their lead. When a single from Mejia preceded the third walk of the game to Price, tempers boiled over for the Seals as former teammate Pedroza scored one with a base hit to right field. After Victoria starter Garcia and manager Darrell Evans were ejected, an error to Petie Montero allowed another Vipers run to cash in for a 7-3 lead.

As the visitors turned to closer Mac Suzuki in the ninth inning, Victoria coach Takashi Miyoshi was given the opportunity to square off against his hero with two out in the bottom of the frame. Striking out on a swinging miss, a tip of the hat from Miyoshi saw the Vipers take the series opener by a 7-3 final.

Evan Greusel was strong from the outset for Calgary, racking up 10 strikeouts en route to the right hander's sixth win on the year, while James Garcia falls to 3-4 with the loss. Colin Moro led the way offensively for the Vipers, notching a pair of RBI's while Jorge Mejia chipped in with a 3-for-4 outing from the bottom of the order.

Victoria returns to Royal Athletic Park for game two against the Calgary Vipers tomorrow night. With the game time set for 7:05 p.m. (PT), Fan Appreciation Night will play host to over 100 giveaways throughout the evening!
