USHL Dubuque Fighting Saints

Greenway and Lipe Tally Two Points Each, Dubuque Clips CR 4-2

February 8, 2019 - United States Hockey League (USHL)
Dubuque Fighting Saints News Release

J.D. Greenway and Chris Lipe had two points each, Matias Maccelli scored his 20th goal of the season and Matthew Thiessen made 18 saves as Dubuque dropped Cedar Rapids 4-2 on Friday night. The Fighting Saints snapped a mini two game losing streak with a big win over their in-state rivals. Dubuque moved even with the RoughRiders in a tied for fourth in the East with 42 points.

-The Fighting Saints not only snapped their mini-streak, but they also snapped CR's seven game home point streak. The RoughRiders lost just their second game in regulation at home since November, 3rd. Dubuque controlled the first two periods of play and did enough in the third to get the win.

-The Fighting Saints forecheck was on full display all night and they took the fight to CR. Dubuque had multiple shifts where they maintained zone time for 30 seconds to a minute. The Fighting Saints scored a few dirty goals coupled with a few goals off the rush.

-Cedar Rapids was down 3-0, but mounted a strong push back. Grant Sillianoff scored a goal with less than three minutes left in the second period and then Aidan McDonagh scored early in the third to make things interesting.

-Dubuque had the answer, however, as James Sanchez deflected a point shot from J.D. Greenway just after the midway point of the third. It was Sanchez's 13th of the season and the extra tally Dubuque needed.

-Blake Pietila was pulled after the third Fighting Saints goal. Pietila was USHL goalie of the week with two wins last weekend. The netminder was 6-1-0-1 with a .921 save percentage heading in to tonight's action. Pietila could be back in net tomorrow night when CR visits Dubuque.

-J.D. Greenway scored his first goal in 11 games on a world-class finish. Greenway received a pass streaking down the left wing and in one motion launched it over the blocker side of Pietila. Greenway's shot hit the back bar and went in and out before anyone could react.

-Chris Lipe was defensively sound as always, but also chipped in with two assists. Lipe looked good offensively and factored in on the middle two goals.

-Luke Robinson played a rugged game and while he remains without his first point as a Fighting Saint, he now has his first fight. Robinson dropped the gloves with Cedar Rapids' Liam Walsh after a post-whistle scrum.

-There were plenty of scrums after the whistle's in this game, especially in the third period. With the two teams facing off tomorrow night the carry over effect could make for a chippy game. Puck drop is at 7:05 at Mystique Community Ice Center.
