Greensboro Swarm News Release
(GREENSBORO, NC) The Greensboro Swarm, the NBA G League affiliate of the Charlotte Hornets, hosted the Windy City Bulls (Chicago Bulls affiliate) on Saturday evening at the Novant Health Fieldhouse. The Swarm (2-8) fell to the Bulls (4-7) 112-105 in the first meeting of the two teams this season.
Greensboro saw three strong performances from Hornets' assignees James Bouknight and Kai Jones, and Hornets' two-way player Théo Maledon in the loss. Bouknight led the way for Greensboro in the first half with 14 points on 5-of-7 from the field.
Following the halftime break, Jones and Maledon came to life for the Swarm, both earning double-double performances. Maledon picked up his second double-double of the regular season with 26 points, 10 rebounds and led all Greensboro players with eight assists. Meanwhile, Jones had another strong performance with the Swarm and recorded 18 points and 11 boards in 35 minutes for his second double double. In five games with the Greensboro, Jones has averaged 19 points per game and 9.4 rebounds per game.
While the trio of Bouknight, Jones and Maledon accounted for 58 points, it was not enough to hold off the Bulls' duo of Javon Freeman-Liberty and Ethan Thompson, who combined for 66 points en route to the victory. Freeman-Liberty had an impactful performance in the third quarter, with 19 points in the period, and would end the contest with a game-high 37 points. While Freeman-Liberty carried the baton for Windy City in the third quarter, Thompson led the way for Bulls in the final frame with 16 points, giving him a final tally of 29 points for the game.
The contest was a dead heat in the first half. Greensboro and Windy City swapped the lead nine times in the opening periods, and the Swarm entered halftime with a two-point advantage. However, following the break, the Bulls pieced together a 10-0 run to open the half and would possess the lead until the game's conclusion.
The Swarm received an extra boost from its bench in the form of Ty-Shon Alexander. Alexander, who had battled injury earlier in the season, earned 17 points in the second half on an impressive 6-of-8 shooting and kept Greensboro within arm's reach of Windy City.
Greensboro hits the road for its next set of games and will face the Wisconsin Herd at 8 p.m. next on Friday.
