GreenJackets tally seven early runs; hold off Crawdads 7-6

The Augusta GreenJackets got a grand slam homerun from 3B David Maroul in the second inning and tallied three unearned runs in the third against Hickory starter Brian Holliday Thursday night. The Crawdad rally came up one run short as Hickory lost its season worst fourth straight, a 7-6 defeat at the hands of the Jackets in front of 2,756 fans.

In the second, Holliday retired two GreenJacket hitters before 2B Hector Borg reached on an infield single. Catcher Nick Conte followed with a single to put two on with two out. After LF Ben Copeland walked to load the bases, Maroul smashed his ninth homer of the year to give Augusta a 4-0 lead.

The Jackets scored three runs in the third inning thanks to three hits and three Crawdad errors. GreenJacket DH Eugenio Velez reached on an error with one out and LF Jose Yens singled to right with an error allowing Velez to move to third base. After an RBI single by 1B Pablo Sandoval made it 5-0, Borg was hit by a pitch and Nick Conte reached on an error with Sandoval scoring to make it 6-0. Copeland followed with a single to plate Conte and give the Jackets a 7-0 advantage.

The Crawdads got to Augusta starter Joe Martinez in the fourth inning. With one out, SS John Santiago was hit by a pitch. Hickory CF Andrew McCutchen singled. With two one and two gone, RF Brad Corley hit his 10th homer of the season to cut the deficit to 7-3.

In the seventh frame, Crawdad catcher Mike McCuision reached on an error, moved to third on a single by Corley, and got the ‘Dads within 7-4 on LF Jason Delaney's RBI infield single.

In the eighth, Hickory 3B Eddie Prasch doubled and moved to third on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly from Hickory 2B Shelby Ford made it a 7-5 game. Ford was the final batter that Martinez faced as Osiris Matos came out of the bullpen to get the final two outs of the inning.

In the ninth, trailing by one run, Matos struck out McCuision and Corley before Delaney hit a solo homer to make it 7-6. Matos struck out DH Steve Lerud to end the game.

Martinez (8-4) worked seven and one third innings of five run (three earned), six hit ball to pick up the win. Holliday (0-2) gave up seven runs (four earned) on ten hits in the loss. Matos picked up his seventh save with one and two third innings of one run, one hit relief.

The two teams play the final game of the series at 7pm Friday night. Hickory right hander Luis Valdez faces Augusta righty Shairon Martis.
