Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Asheville, NC - The Asheville Tourists got a complete game out of starting pitcher Alex Gillingham, sending the Augusta GreenJackets to their third straight loss - a 6-1 setback at the hands of the Tourists on Friday night.
Asheville got an early lead and ran away with things after just four innings, clubbing three home runs and getting all six of their runs on extra base hits. The Tourists took a 2-0 lead on their first hit of the night - a two-run homer by Will Swanner - after Harrold Riggins walked to lead off the inning. In the third, Trevor Story's RBI double pushed the Asheville lead to 3-0. The Tourists would double that lead in the fourth on back-to-back homers by Tyler Massey and Taylor Featherston to jump out to a 6-0 edge.
That would be plenty of run support for Gillingham (3-3), who went the distance and allowed an unearned run on five hits and no walks while striking out eight - a career-high. All 27 putouts came on either strikeouts or groundouts as no outs were collected by Tourists' outfielders in the entire game.
Augusta did manage a run in the sixth. With one out, an error put Jesus Galindo at first and Elliott Blair was hit by a pitch to put runners at first and second. Shawn Payne's RBI single made it a 6-1 game in Payne's first game off the disabled list. Ben Thomas grounded into a double play though - the second one the GreenJackets hit into - to end the inning. After that, the GreenJackets were held to just one hit the rest of the night.
Kevin Couture (2-4) lost his third straight and was roughed up in five innings to the tune of six runs on eight hits. Derek Law and Jacob Dunnington managed to hold the Tourists to one hit in three scoreless innings of relief, striking out five.
All five opposing starting pitchers on the GreenJackets' current road trip have thrown seven innings or more.
The GreenJackets have lost three straight and four of the five on their current road trip. On Saturday, Edwin Escobar (2-3, 3.05) will try to snap that skid against Tourists' lefty Tyler Anderson (3-0, 3.75). First pitch from Asheville comes at 6:05 p.m. with radio pregame coverage beginning at 5:50 p.m. on ESPN Radio 1340 AM and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
The GreenJackets return home on Tuesday June 5th to open a three-game series against the Greensboro Grasshoppers with a 7:05 p.m. first pitch. Single-game tickets for any GreenJackets home game are currently available by calling the GreenJackets front office at 706-922-WINS and online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
