Green Day: Green Tops Grey in Intrasquad Game

EVERETT, Wash. - Prospect forward Connor Dewar scored a goal, added a pair of assists and returning forward Gunnar Wegleitner buried two goals to help lift Team Green to a 4-2 victory in the annual Everett Silvertips Green vs. Grey Game at XFINITY Arena on Sunday.
Wegleitner, who had a goal in 43 games last year during his first Silvertips season, opened the scoring and earned the game-winning goal in the second period, capping a rush of two goals exchanged in a 20-second span.
Team Green earned a 1-0 edge at 7:31 of the first period when Wegleitner finished a wrister on Carter Hart from between the circles, after a turnover in the neutral zone and a set up by 2015 CHL Import draftee Yan Khomenko.
Green maintained the shots edge in the first period, 8-4 but nearly surrendered the lead on two separate occasions: a give-and-go that deflected wide of the net, and Devon Skoleski's wrister off a semi-breakaway with 3:30 to play that Austin Lotz steered away with his shoulder.
Dewar expanded Team Green's lead to 2-0 at 1:37 of the second period on another wrist shot from the left circle, set up by Kevin Davis. Team Grey cracked through with Nick Henry's power play goal for a 2-1 deficit at 10:01, a rebound in the crease after Remi Laurencelle set up Matthew Clarke on a cross-ice feed to the right circle.
Laurencelle threatened to tie the game with 5:50 left when he hit the post off a one-timer, but veteran Patrick Bajkov forged the 2-2 draw for Team Grey on another rebound at the doorstep with 1:43 remaining.
On the next shift, Wegleitner slipped behind the defense on a feed by Dewar and converted a backhander on Mario Petit for Team Green's 3-2 lead.
Graham Millar wrapped up the game with an empty net goal with 7.4 seconds left in regulation.
NOTES: Brennan Sonne, Zed Malenica and Rod Egan served as coaches for Team Green ... Robert Zito, who replaced Lotz at 10:01 of the second period, earned the win with 17 saves ... Carter Hart started for Team Grey and earned 15 saves, also replaced by Petit at the 10:01 mark ... Team Green led the game in shots, 33-26.
The Holiday Inn Preseason Classic tournament returns to XFINITY Arena during Labor Day weekend, Sep. 4-6, with nine games over three days. The 'Tips start the regular season in Prince George on Sep. 25 before the 13th season of Silvertips hockey debuts in Everett with opening weekend on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 10 and 11.
