Great Scotts: IceCaps Blanked by Devils

March 7, 2015 - American Hockey League (AHL)
St. John's IceCaps News Release

Scott Clemmensen replaced an injured Scott Wedgewood in the second period but it didn't stop the Albany Devils as they topped the St. John's IceCaps 2-0 at Mile One Centre on Saturday night.

The goaltending duo combined for 28 saves to earn the win and Reid Boucher picked up a goal and an assist as the IceCaps and Devils played to a split of the two-game series.

Connor Hellebuyck had a solid night of his own, making 30 saves.

The Devils first found the back of the net with 2:40 to go in the opening frame as Stefan Matteau picked up his second goal of the weekend. He found himself in a great scoring position near the top of the left circle and beat Hellebuyck with a wrist shot to the glove side.

Then, the rough stuff began.

Austen Brassard and Ben Thomson dropped the gloves for an energetic tilt with just under two minutes to go in the opening period, then early in the second, Scott Kosmachuk and Brandon Burlon served up some punches just over five minutes into the frame.

Then with 8:08 remaining in the second period, Clemmensen entered the game in relief, as Wedgewood appeared to suffer an upper-body injury after colliding with an IceCaps player in the crease.

Albany pushed the lead to 2-0 with just over seven minutes remaining in the second as Boucher intercepted an errant pass in the offensive zone and cut in alone on Hellebuyck, making no mistake beating the goaltender blocker side at 12:47.

The IceCaps had a chance to get things going early in the third period as they earned their only power play of the game 54 seconds into the frame, but the Devils killed it off and managed to keep the IceCaps off the scoreboard for the remainder of the game to seal the victory.

The IceCaps now have a few days off before hosting the Manchester Monarchs at Mile One Centre for an important three-game set starting Wednesday, March 11.
