Great Falls Voyagers News Release
GREAT FALLS, Mont. (August 25, 2015)Â - The Great Falls Voyagers avoided their first shutout of 2015 by scoring one in the ninth, but lost their first straight as the Billings Mustangs took Tuesday's series opener 2-1 at Centene Stadium.
Pitching dominated on both sides for much of the night, with Jacob Constante (3-2) outdueling Tanner Banks (4-4). The southpaw allowed just two hits in a career-high seven innings of work, and collected a season-high seven strikeouts.
The Mustangs (12-13, 29-33) grabbed the lead for their lefty in the second. Kevin Franklin started the frame with a triple off of Banks, then came home one batter later on a Tyler Stephenson single.
The lead stayed 1-0 for Billings until the seventh, when they added an insurance run. Stephenson was once again involved for the visitors as he got the inning started with a double. After a wild pitch moved him to third, Hector Vargas brought him around with a fielder's choice.
The Voyagers (12-13, 29-32) did not threaten throughout most of the night, but the bats did wake up in the last two innings as they tried to mount a comeback. In the eighth, Great Falls put together back-to-back singles with two outs, but Soid Marquez snuffed out the threat with a strikeout.
In the ninth, Great Falls put two of the first three on against Marquez, who was replaced by Jake Johnson. Ryan Jones hit an infield single against the righty, plating the first Voyager run of the night, moving the tying runner into scoring position, and putting the potential winning run at first.
Johnson buckled down from there however, getting a strikeout and a pop up to slam the door and earn his second save, while sending the Voyagers to their season-high tying fifth consecutive loss.
The Voyagers and Mustangs continue their four-game set Wednesday night at Centene Stadium. Great Falls will send righty Evin Einhardt (5-2, 4.11) to the hill, while Billings will counter with a right-hander of their own, in Jose Lopez (1-2, 2.79). First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m., and coverage will begin at 6:45 on 1400 AM KXGF and gfvoyagers.com.
