Rome Emperors News Release
Rome, GA -The Rome Braves fell victim to the Greensboro Grasshoppers 8-4 in front of 3,352 fans at State Mutual Stadium Tuesday night.
The Grasshoppers started off the scoring in the top of the first as Kris Harvey stroked a two RBI triple that plated Andrew Jenkins and Brett Hayes who had both previously singled giving Greensboro an early 2-0 lead. Rome wouldn't be held scoreless for long as catcher Cody Clark knocked in Quentin Davis with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the first cutting Rome's deficit 2-1.
Greensboro would add to their lead in the top of the fourth as Brett Hayes led off the inning with a single and, after a single by Colin Roberson, would score on a subsequent throwing error by Rome shortstop Jose Santos making the score 3-1. Jonathan Fulton would then deliver a crushing blow as he redirected a Dustin Evans pitch over the wall in left for a two run homer extending their lead to 5-1.
Greensboro would score another run in the top half of the sixth before the Braves began to make a dent in the Grasshopper's 6-1 lead. Derrick Arnold led off the inning with a triple and would later score on a RBI groundout by left fielder Ovandy Suero making the score 6-2. Rome would continue the comeback attempt as Davis singled, Robert Marcial walked, and Clark would smack a double allowing both base runners to score cutting the deficit to 6-4. That would be as close as the Braves would get as Greensboro added an insurance run in the sixth and two more in the ninth to give the Grasshoppers a 8-4 victory.
Atlanta Braves pitcher John Thomson (0-1) who started the game in a rehabilitation appearance for Rome picked up the loss going one and two third innings and allowing two earned runs. Greensboro starter Sean West (4-4) earned the win for the Grasshoppers going six innings and giving up three earned runs. Bradley Stone picked up the save (1).
Rome and Greensboro will play game three of the series tomorrow afternoon in a Business Person's special that will begin at 1pm. For ticket information call 706-378-5144 or log on to www.romebraves.com.
