CHARLESTON, SC - Charleston received 12 walks from West Virginia pitching, including three with the bases loaded, as the RiverDogs snapped a five-game losing streak by beating the West Virginia Power, 5-3, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday night in front of 3,547 fans at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park.

With the victory, Charleston improves to 14-18 in the second half and 52-50 overall while West Virginia slips to 14-17 in the second half and 53-47 overall.

Charleston starter Erick Abreu pitched six shutout innings of two-hit ball and improved his record to 4-1. Cory Stuart recorded his team-leading eighth save as he pitched to only one batter in the top of the ninth, recording a fly out with the tying runners on base.

The Power's 12 bases on balls tied a season high for a Charleston opponent in one game, and at one point, West Virginia walked nine of 14 batters. However, the RiverDogs did not take full advantage of a total of 19 base runners, leaving 12 men on base, nine of which were in scoring position.

The RiverDogs opened the bottom of the first with three consecutive singles against Power starter Steve Garrison (4-4), including a RBI knock to center by Reegie Corona that handed the hosts a 1-0 lead. More damage could have been done, but James Cooper later hit into an inning-ending, bases-loaded double-play.

In the fourth, Charleston took advantage of five walks from two Power pitchers and plated two runs with Mario Holmann and Austin Jackson receiving RBIs. Again, the RiverDogs could have opened the flood gates, but Tim Battle grounded into an inning-ending, bases-loaded double-play.

In Charleston's two-run fifth, Corona scored on a wild pitch and Holman drove home his second run with a RBI walk.

West Virginia rallied in the ninth, postponing Charleston's eighth shutout of the season, when Michael Bell smacked a 2-run double to right and Michael Brantley added a RBI single to left against Keaton Everitt.

With runners on first and second and two out, Stuart forced pinch-hitter Nate Yoho to fly out to right field.

Garrison lasted only three innings, allowing one run on three hits. Pitchers Matt Kretzschmar and Wilfrido Laureano each walked four RiverDogs.

Game 3 of this four-game set is slated for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m. when Charleston sends southpaw Garrett Patterson (0-3, 4.85 ERA) to the mound while West Virginia counters with lefty Rafael Lluberes (4-6, 3.86 ERA).
