Grant, Jones Win NLL Monthly Awards...Again
April 5, 2012 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Colorado Mammoth News Release
DENVER - In January, Mammoth forwards John Grant Jr. and Adam Jones won the National Lacrosse League's Player of the Month and Rookie of the Month awards, respectively. In February, Grant was once again the league's best player, taking home the honor. This afternoon, the NLL announced that the duo has once again won awards, Jones for Rookie of the Month and Grant for Co-Player of the Month. The 37-year-old shares the accolade with Toronto Rock forward Garrett Billings.
"Throughout the season, John and Adam have been an integral part of our success on the offensive end," said Mammoth head coach Bob Hamley. "They were awesome in March."
Despite missing two games in the month with an upper-body injury, Grant led all scorers with 16 goals and was the two-time Offensive Player of the Week. He also recorded 23 assists, and is on pace to shatter the NLL single-season points record. The Peterborough, ON native set Colorado's franchise record for points (98) in a season on Sunday in Rochester, and has three regular-season games remaining to eclipse the existing league mark of 115 points, established by Buffalo's John Tavares in 2001. Grant is on pace for 124.
"I would like to thank my teammates for carrying me this month as I was dealing with an injury," Grant said humbly.
Jones notched 12 goals, 21 assists and 30 loose balls in six games in March, and was the NLL's Rookie of the Week twice. The 22-year-old had an assist on the game-winning goal in Colorado's road win in Buffalo to start the month, and scored the game-winner in Philadelphia 9:38 into overtime on March 25.
"Our team played really well this month," said Jones. "We're meshing as a team at a great time. To win the award is just icing on the cake."
In Grant's absence, Jones led the Mammoth with three goals and eight assists in a home-and-home series with the Washington Stealth. He is tops in the league among rookies in points (64) and assists (37).
The Mammoth hosts Billings and the defending NLL champion Toronto Rock on Saturday, April 14 at 7pm MT on HealthONE Field at Pepsi Center on "ËLacrosse Out Cancer' Night.
